Darrell Scott, the much talked about running back, got to make his home debut on Saturday night and put on a show for the home crowd, displaying power and athleticism.
He was able to shake the jitters he felt in the first game against ND (sat out an entire season) and could be poised for a huge season if what we saw on Saturday continues (just don't jump over anymore defensive players please)
The 6-1 240-pound running back showed off some incredible athleticism on Saturday night. He finished the evening leading the team with 11 carries for 81 yards.
31 of those yards came on one carry as he leaped over the Ball State safety and continued down the field, drawing the attention of the fans and coaches (part of the great image above). He also caught one pass for 11 yards, showing his ability to get out of the backfield and work down field, not just powering through the line. Holtz has stated he doesn't want him jumping like that too much more (for obvious reasons) but was very impressed in what he saw in the junior.
I must say, seeing Scott carry the ball, I am even more impressed with him. Watching him on TV, seeing the highlights, etc. I could see the potential and the power, but I came away with the thought that he was more of a bruiser type running back, able to break outside, but not that fast. Seeing him live and in action and leaping around (smiling the entire time) I think he could be a great one.
He is no track star like Shaw is, but his above average speed is exciting to watch and could be huge down the road. His ability to get the tough yards in the middle but also get down the field and make big plays like that could be a real game changer, something the Bulls haven't had at running back (consistently).
Scott does remind me of another player that calls Raymond James his home, LaGarrette Blount of the Bucs. Blount is 6-0 247-pounds, so the speed, size, and that leaping ability, are all there. If he is similar to Blount in any form, this could be a very fun year at running back.

Good observation in regards to Blount, but LeGarrette only runs a 4.7 40 at his best, while Scott consistently runs 4.4 and has been clocked as fast as 4.3. He also has way better hands than Blount and a bit more shake, though I do agree he is a bruiser.
ReplyDeleteBoth are big backs, no question. Blount has surprising speed, did run track back in high school, so the ability to get downfield is there. What is interesting is the speed Scott has, dangerous combo.
