USF Softball Takes on Drake

The USF ladies, coming off of a 3-1 start to the season, take on Drake in the first game of the USF Invitational (game starts at 4:45PM. weather could be a factor today with rain in the area, but no delays as of yet).

Drake (who faces Wisconsin before facing USF in the evening game).  Drake is 2-2 on the season (before Wisconsin of course) is looking to improve on their 34-21 effort from last year.  The Bulls were able to take care of business last week and battled Florida tough, but will need to rally in the first game against Drake in this opening tournament.

USF Baseball Begins 2012 Season with OSU

Game on.
The 2012 USF baseball season is finally here!  The Bulls, coming off of a disappointing 2011 season are hoping to make it back to the Big East tournament and beyond.  Their first test will be the powers of the Big Ten Conference coming to St. Pete/Clearwater for the  Big Ten/Big East Challenge (game scheduled to start at 10AM).

The Bulls will take on Ohio State in the first game of the season.  The Buckeyes finished the 2011 season at 26-27 (13-11) including 7-7 at neutral sights.  The Buckeyes return a solid team that has a lot of power and solid pitching posing a great challenge to open the season.  Time to take a look at the OSU lineup and what they bring to the field.

USF Beats Villanova 65 to 51

Hugh Robertson had 14 as the Bulls pulled away from Villanova late in route to their 16th win of the season (Picture: AP)
The USF Bulls, looking to defend their home court, were able to pull away in an early defensive battle 65 to 51. The game was tied at 20 all at the half, but the Bulls were able to pull ahead after a flagrant foul against Nova and a technical on Jay Wright that gave the Bulls the lead and momentum, they never looked back after that as they improve to 16-10 (9-4) on the season (that is not a typo, trust me on that).

USF MBB Takes on Villanova

The USF Bulls 15-10 (8-4) are back home as they take on Villnova for the second time this season.  Nova, 11-13 (4-8) is just 1-7 on the road this season and struggling a bit to find consistent scoring and rebounding inside the paint area.

In the first game between the two teams, USF won 74 to 57.  The Bulls were able to outrebound the Wildcats 38 to 26 as their front line size and length frustrated Jay Wright and team.  Jawanza Poland had 20 points and Blake Nash had 12 points and 6 assists to spark the second half run that put USF ahead for good.  Let's see if they can do it again (game starts at 7PM at the Forum).

Know Thy Enemy: Epic Villanova Edition

The USF Bulls are back home as they take on Villanova in round two in another critical game for the Bulls.  After beating Pitt last Saturday, the Bulls at 15-10 (8-4) have another chance to notch a league win, but it won't be easy as the Nova Wildcats come to town.  The Bulls were able to beat them in the last game on the road, but expect a fired up team to test the Bulls on their home court.  To get a better inside scoop on the Wildcats and where they stand at this point in the season, I once again called upon my friend Miguel from the Biggest Fan of the Big East contest to get the inside knowledge of the Nova nation (make sure to check out Miguel's site here).

USF WBB Knocks Off Marquette

The USF ladies were able to notch a huge win on the road tonight as they beat 61 to 48 over Marquette, improving to 14-13 (6-7) on the season.  The Bulls had a strong lead in the first half, but a late rally by Marquette brought them close, but not close enough as the Bulls prevail without the services of top scorer Jasmine Wynne who is still recovering from her concussion.

It's Official, WVU Leaving the Big East

USF, along with the rest of the Big East, won't be facing Tavon Austin and WVU starting this season.
From Brett McMurphy CBS - It's now officially official, WVU is headed to the Big 12.

News came today that the Big East voted to "terminate" the membership of WVU, effective on June 30th. This move will allow WVU to head to the Big 12 for the start of the 2012-2013 academic season. According to CBS, the Big East will get $20 million from WVU, but will only pay $10 million, the other $10 million being "loaned" to WVU from the Big 12 (isn't that nice of them).

USF WBB Takes on Marquette

The USF ladies, 13-13 (5-7), got a huge win on Saturday as they held the hot hooting Villanova Wildcats.  The Bulls were able to play clutch defense and got enough offense with star guard Jasmine Wynne still out with a concussion.  They now face the Marquette Golden Eagles who are 13-11 (4-7) on the season.  Marquette is averaging 61 points per game and has a record of 10-4 at home, so the Bulls face a hard game ahead of them as they try to get a few late season wins.

Urgent News for USF Students, Alumni, and Supporters:
Save Our School!

We don't venture far from sports usually, but it appears now that our university is in a bit of trouble as far as funding. Admittedly, I am not too big on the political side, so you'll have to forgive me if some of these things are not properly stated. I will, however, not be posting any opinions on here. You all are welcome to post what you feel in the comments or anywhere else, but this post is meant strictly to inform those who aren't up to date on the whole situation.

Yesterday it became apparent that the Florida state senate had entertained a proposition by state Senator J.D. Alexander to cut an egregious amount from the state of Florida's financial contribution to the state public university system. You may have heard Alexander's name in the recent months in the talks of the potential, and now probably impending, split of the USF Polytechnic satellite campus from the University of South Florida system. If you've heard of the cuts, you've surely heard that USF is the one shouldering a very significant amount of the load, suffering a cut of over 58% of their state funding. USF released an illustration of what they plan to do to cope with the losses this morning. I'll explain the situation after the jump.
