Who is Nevada?

The Bulls are headed out west for the second game of the season as they travel to face Nevada for the second game of the 2012 season. So who is Nevada?  The Wolfpack, who went 7-6 (5-2) last season, losing to Southern Miss in the Hawaii Bowl, are part of the Mountain West Conference.  They beat Cal 31 to 24 to start the season, so they will be looking to continue their hot start to the season as they open their first game of the year in front of the home crowd.

Nevada  is a very unique team that is known for its pistol offense, designed by their head coach, Chris Ault. They have been to 7 straight bowl games and will prove to be a tough test as the Bulls make a very rare trip out west (game begins at 3:30).

USF Men's Soccer Hangs on to Beat Tulsa

After beating SMU two nights ago, the Bulls took the field once again to face host team Tulsa in the second game of the Hurricane Classic.  After a chippy game with multiple fouls, yellow cards and even a red card (called on Samuel Hosseini late in the game), the Bulls escaped with a 2 to 1 win, improving to 3-0-0 on the season.

Roberto Alterio struck first in the 51st minute on an assist from Lucas Baldin.  Tulsa struck back in the second half to tie the game, but thanks to the chippy game (not the best, but it worked) the Bulls got a penalty kick in the 79th minute with Lucas Baldin striking it through to give the Bulls the go-ahead goal and the win.  Eric Osswald made 4 saves, working hard as the defense did enough and held strong despite the attack from Tulsa all game long.

The Bulls now return home to face South Carolina on Thursday night as part of the USF tournament, the game begins at 7:30PM.  Great road trip by the men as they protect their 4th ranking and continue to play well down the stretch in games.

Chasing Grothe: Post-Game 1

Entering Game 1 of the 2012 season. B.J. Daniels was sitting on 7973 total career yards, 2902 behing Matt Grothe's Big East all-time yardage record. In order to stay on track, B.J. would need to average 242 yards per game to achieve the record in the regular season. After the game against UT-Chattanooga, it is clear that he'll probably need to go get some bonus yards somewhere else in order to feel a bit more comfortable with his chances. In a performance that wasn't quite abysmal, but was far from flawless, Daniels passed for 265 yards and ran for a net of 3, bringing his total to 268 yards for the season, which is technically on track, but against a presumably inferior opponent like UT-C, it leaves something to be desired. Either way, entering USF's second game of the season, B.J. will be 2634 yards from the record. In a 12 game season, that means his requisite average will drop to just under 240 yards per game. Considering a postseason appearance for the Bulls, he'd need 219.5 YPG. Nevada will be a much better opponent next week, so Daniels and the rest of the Bulls offense need to fix whatever problems they had in the opener if there will be any chance of staying on track this year.

USF Women's Soccer Falls 1 to 2 to Dartmouth

The USF ladies, after dropping a tough game to Georgia, the ladies tried to rebound against Dartmouth, but Dartmouth wouldn't have it, beating the Bulls 2 to 1.  USF is now 2-3-0 on the season after the hard fought loss.

Dartmouth scored first in the game, but Ciara Patterson, on an assist from Marsha Harper got the Bulls tied heading into the second half.  Dartmouth struck late in the 72nd minute and the Bulls could not get a score late to tie it.  Sharla Passariello, after scoring a goal in the first 4 games, was held in check despite taking 7 shots.  Christiane Endler made 4 saves in the game overall.

The ladies will look to get back to their winning ways when they head to Charleston, SC next Friday to take on the College of Charleston in the Charleston Cup.

The Morning After: Football Wins, but Not Pretty; Questions Still Remain

Football is back and the Bulls took care of business in the first game against UTC Chattanooga, winning 34 to 13.  The defense played well, B.J. Daniels made some good plays, but there are still questions remaining after the game and as the team prepares for a long road trip to Reno on Saturday.

IT'S FINALLY HERE!
It's here, after 276 days of waiting, it is finally here.  The season opener for 2012 season is just hours away as the Bulls retake the field to face UTC.  We have talked all week about the game, from the long snapper to what tempo UTC will be running, but now, we get to watch.  Parking lots for the game open at 2PM outside Raymond James, so pack up the car (remember it will be a hot one out there), tailgate, enjoy, and get ready for the start of the season.
