Time to take a look at the UCONN special teams. USF did a better job last week stopping kick returns, but didn't get a lot of great punts going. The special teams unit will have to step up in this game because it will play a big part in the outcome. Let's see who USF will have to face.
Senior Dave Teggart (6-0 203-pounds) is the place kicker for the Huskies. He is 9 of 14 on the season, hitting a long of 53 yards and has had one kick blocked. Sophomore Chad Christen (6-1 201-pounds) is the reserve place kicker and also the kickoff specialist. He has kicked off 30 times this season, averaging 65.1 yards per kick, and has landed 9 back for touchbacks so far. This will pose a challenge for the return game and getting Lindsey Lamar lose.
Sophomore Cole Wagner (6-2 211-pounds) is the starting punter. He has punted the ball 42 times this season, averaging 40.8 yards per kick, including a long of 63 (yikes). He has landed 7 punts inside the opponents 20 yard line, so Mitchell (if back on the field) and other returners will have a hard time coming back from his kicks. Chad Christen is the reserve punter.
Junior wide receiver Nick Williams (5-10 185-pounds) is the leading kick return man. He has returned 18 kicks returns for 337 yards (21.1 yards per return) including a long of 37, so the coverage team will have to be at their best to get to him. Freshman running back Deshon Foxx (5-10 170-pounds) has returned 4 kicks for 84 yards (21 yards per average) including a long of 20, so the Huskies have two dangerous returners.
Nick Williams is also the top punt return man. He has 12 returns for 51 yards, including a long of 19 yards. Freshman wide receiver Byron Jones (6-1 187-pounds) is the reserve punt return man.
The Huskies have a solid return team and an overall good unit. Since they are not the best on offense, special teams plays a bigger role for UCONN to get field position and get points when they can get close. The Bulls will have to work hard to shut this unit down.
