Maikon Bonani returns for 2012 as the top place kicker for the Bulls (Picture: www.gousfbulls.com) |
The 2011 season is over and now we start to take a look at what is returning to the team in 2012. Now this does not include the 2012 recruiting class which could shift before National Signing Day (always happens). This also does not include anyone that might be transferring out, leaving the team, or headed to the NFL early. It is hard to guess who might leave before it actually happens. So for now, these are the returning players for the 2012 season and gives everyone an idea of what the team will look like heading into next season.
This time we are starting with special teams. The Bulls were up and down all season in special teams. There was bad punting, lack of returns, but also solid coverage at times as well. Let's see if the unit returning can give the Bulls a solid season in 2012.
Kickers
The Bulls are actually solid at the kicker position for 2012. Maikon Bonani returns for his senior season and will be one of the better kickers in the country. Freshman Mattias Ciabatti will also be on the team, pushing him to get better. Kickoff specialist Marvin Kloss returns as well, giving the Bulls his powerful leg.
The punter situation will be interesting throughout the offseason. Justin Brockhaus-Kann returns as the senior starter on the team, but after a rough 2011 season, freshman Chris Veron will be competing for the job and it could be a week to week struggle for the job.
At long snapper, Mike Walsh returns to the team. David Burdetsky is also on the roster as his back-up. JBK is the holder for field goals, so overall the unit is strong as well.
Return game
At kick return, USF has Lindsey Lamar, one of the best in the league, back for his senior season. Marcus Shaw could also be in the mix as well to return kicks this season due to his great speed. At punt return there is Terrence Mitchell who will be healthy after missing the rest of 2011 with his concussion, although it is not clear if he will be returning punts anymore. Victor Marc was a key return man this season, but drops plagued him and let Evan Landi take over the job. Andre Davis is another player that could possibly return punts, but it will be determined over the Fall camp who will get the job.
Overall, USF should return nearly everyone on special teams, from kicker to long snapper. This will help as the Bulls look to improve next season. With the same players coming, same coaches in place, the unit could be among the best in the conference.
