USF Volleyball Takes on FGCU

The USF volleyball continues to play tight matches, but is coming away with big wins in the process. The ladies have won two straight 5 set matches to improve to 8-10 (4-2) on the season, getting closer to .500.

Tonight they take a break from conference play as they take on Florida Gulf Coast University at 6:30 PM. FGCU is 9-8 on the season, 3-3 at home. They have a very young, but talented squad that will push the Bulls.

The Eagles are led by freshman outside-hitter/middle-blocker Joll Hopper (6-2). She has 208 kills, 32 service ace,s and 115 digs on the season. Sophomore outside-hitter/middle-blocker Katilin Holm (6-2) has 161 kills and 20 service aces, so the service game will be a huge key to match in this match.

Freshman middle-blocker Olivia Mesner (6-2) has 136 kills and 15 digs on the season (another key freshman playing well). Freshman setter Gigi Meyer (5-7) leads the team with 487 sets and has added 13 service aces. Senior outside-hitter Jelena Simic (5-10) has 102 kills, 12 sets, 10 service aces, and 139 digs so far, adding a veteran presence on the court and doing a little bit of everything for the team. Junior middle-blocker Brooke Kohler (6-3) has 40 kills and 8 service aces as well.

USF needs to win this game on the road. They are playing well right now and could be hitting their mid-season stride. A non-conference game away from home in the middle of the week is a bit odd and could throw them off a bit, but they have to come out playing like they have been at home. Look for Janice Rivera, Valerie El Houssine, and others to come out strong and take care of business.
