With the Big East awards set to come out today, I thought I would weigh in and hand out my MVP awards to the defensive and offensive stars of the 2011 football season. There were a lot of names to pick from, but to me, these were the best players for the team. Let's see if you agree with my picks.
Offensive MVP - Darrell Scott
Scott burst onto the scene and carried the work load all year for USF, gaining over 800 yards rushing and over 100 receiving in his first season after sitting out an entire season. Scott battled injuries and did fade towards the end of the year (no touchdowns late), but the overall body of work speaks for itself. I was going to give the award to Daniels and his improved stats this season, but Scott was the work horse to me and after sitting for so long, he impressed with his work.
Offensive rookie of the year - Deonte Welch
Welch got his chance to play this season and impressed. He put up over 400 yards receiving, getting most of the yardage after the catch (AKA the YAC master as so many are labeling him now). He showed strong hands and great speed on the field. Now that he has experience, he will only get better in the years to come.
Defensive MVP - DeDe Lattimore
This was a no brainer pick for me. Lattimore led the team in tackles, flying all over the field. He forced fumbles, made stops in the backfield, and got to the quarterback whenever Snyder would send him on the blitz. He has great speed and wraps up the ball carrier as soon as he makes contact. It is scary to see the numbers he is putting up in just his second season and can't wait for him to get even better.
Defensive rookie of the year - Elkino Watson
Watson was one of the top recruits in the 2011 class and got his chance to shine with injuries on the front line. Watson put up huge numbers this season, anchoring the center of the line, and allowing the ends to pressure off the edge. He showed his talent in just his first season and with seniors leaving, he will have his chance to get the starting job for next season and put up even bigger numbers.
Moment of the year - Kayvon Webster fumble return for TD vs. Notre Dame
Watching that game, the Irish came out and drove down the field on USF. The Irish were about to go ahead and score, but Jerrell Young ripped the ball out of the ball carrier's hands and Kayvon Webster grabbed it and ran down the field and put USF up as they would get the huge upset win to start the season. I was sitting with a group of friends watching Kayvon run and was screaming as if I was at the game myself. It was one of the greatest memories.
Personal moment of the year - FAMU game
This is a personal moment for myself, but the FAMU game was amazing. I got passes to the press box, watching the game and tweeting all day about it. I got to sit in the nice air conditioned box as USF put up historic numbers and at half time got to see the Marching 100 as well. It was a great night and a great experience that will stay with me for a long time.

So those are my award winners. Agree? Disagree? Tell me who you think should get the awards.
