Season is Over: USF Drops Final Game 27 to 30

B.J. Daniels got the start, but errors by everyone cost USF another close game (Al Messercschmidt/Getty Images)

The season is over. 5-7 (1-6). No bowl game. The first losing season since 2004. Senior night. All of these events happened last night as the Bulls put an end to one of the most frustrating and disappointing seasons in recent history to rest.

The Bulls were only down by 6 in the first half. Daniels threw a pick six that gave WVU the lead in the first half, but the defense was able to get after WVU and lock down the passing offense. Daniels after the rough start to the game, began to throw the ball well, finding his targets, showing no signs of rust. He ran well, sliding and getting out of bounds and the running game, behind Scott, carried the load for the offense as they went into half time.

The second half was the turning point. USF took the lead briefly, but WVU answered right back with a kick off return for a touchdown. Special teams continued to haunt the Bulls the entire game and the bad coverage gave up the ball ans score to WVU. A pick six by USF gave the Bulls back the lead, but WVU tied it up late and in their final drive (thanks to a B.J. Daniels fumble), moved down the field, thanks to poor defense and set up the game winning field goal, another one, that ended the USF season. A bad penalty by Ryne Giddins allowed them to get free yards and take care of business.

There was a lot of blame to go around after this game. USF lost another game in close fashion, thanks in part to execution, defense, offense, special teams, and coaching. The little mistakes have hurt the team all season and it was the little mistakes such as a kick off out of bounds or a missed tackle, that cost the team again.

This may be one of the most frustrating teams in recent history. A team with so much talent, speed, athletic ability, failed to live up to they hype. There were signs at the beginning of the season that the team would not be the greatest of all time, but winning the first four showed they could handle business, but after the Pitt loss, things have been bad ever since. Losing 7 of the last 8 is rough to see, the losing season is even worse (only third losing season in program history). There will be a lot said in the coming weeks about the team, coaching staff, and impact on recruiting, but for now, we just have to deal with reality.
