From Greg Auman - USF football got some bad news today as junior running back Darrell Scott, after just one season with the Bulls, will forgo his senior season and head to the NFL.
The 6-1 240-pound running back out of Ventura, California, transferred to USF two years ago from Colorado, sitting out the 2010 season. Scott carried the ball 153 times this season for USF for 824 yards (5.3 yards per carry) and 5 total touchdowns. He also caught 15 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown. While at first glance the numbers seem strong, the real story is the lack of production down the stretch against BCS foes. Scott did not score one rushing touchdown in the final 8 games.
Scott provided some power to the USF backfield, but was inconsistent at times and battled several injuries, starting with a hamstring in spring and concussion like symptoms later in the season. He had solid numbers and has the NFL-size body, but did not have the consistent production when it mattered most to make him an NFL-ready running back.
As GA noted, Kel Kiper does not have Scott on his underclassmen draft board and there has been no word on this draft stock. Coach Holtz stated he wanted Scott to return, but it seems Scott decided for himself and will look to take the next step.
With Scott, and we wish him luck with his decision, it leaves USF with some more depth concerns. Right now, USF has just senior Demetris Murray and junior Marcus Shaw for the running back position. Freshman Willie Davis and rarely-used Bradley Battles will also be in the mix as well, unless USF addresses the issue with depth in recruiting or with a possible transfer (never know).
