The 2011-2012 season has gotten off to a solid start for Coach Fernandez and his team. After coming off of a 12-19 disappointing season last year, the Bulls are 6-4, half way to last years win total. They have done it without last seasons leading scorer Andrea Smith who continues to recover from ACL surgery and without newcomer Inga Orekhova, who is one of the highest ranked recruits in program history. So what has been the difference this season for USF? The real game changer for USF has been the play of senior guard Jasmine Wynne.
Wynne struggled last season as she returned from ACL surgery in 2009. She scored just 3.4 points a game and 1.8 rebounds a game as she was slowly worked back into the action on the court, but the ability to drive to the hoop, create, and work in the up-tempo was difficult for her as she came back from the surgery.
This season is a different story for Wynne. Fully healthy, she leads the team in scoring at 14 points a game, shooting 42% from the floor. She is pulling 5.9 rebounds a game, leads the team with 28 assists, and has 29 steals on the season. She is moving well, creating shots for others, getting after opponents on defense, and finding her range all over the court, a complete 180 from last season.
Wynne is carrying a lot of the scoring load to start the season. The starting lineup is balanced, but she continues to shine. With Smith possibly out this season (could medical redshirt) and Orekhova not back until January (suspension for first 15 games due to NCAA transfer rules) Wynne continues to run the show and has the Bulls with a winning record as they try to rise higher this season than just 10th place as they were picked to finish.
