B.J Daniels will have some competition at quarterback heading into the Spring. |
From Brian Bennett ESPN - Coach Skip Holtz made an interesting statement yesterday during an interview on the quarterback situation entering the Spring. He said it would be an open competition in order to get the ball rolling for all of his quarterbacks.
Heading into the Spring practices, many have assumed that Daniels, the most experienced quarterback in the conference would be the starter. But it appears that the battle is wide open for Eveld, Gunsby, and even Matt Floyd. [keep reading]
Now before people scratch their heads or race to the side of Daniels, this is in no way a shot at Daniels. Last season Daniels did struggle and Eveld did show promise. Mix in the athletic presence of Gunsby and the pro-style quarterback in Floyd, and all of a sudden there is depth at the position.
Having depth at quarterback is something the Bulls are not use to and will take advantage of this year. Holtz is making the competition open in Spring and into the Fall to see which player is able to rise to the challenge. Many expect Daniels to win the job, but he will be pushed and challenged, which is a great thing. Daniels will only grow and get better with the competition. The backups will progress as well due to the experience they will get as well, giving the position more depth and reliability for Holtz.
So we probably won't have an official starter named until week 1 at this point, but it will be fun to watch the quarterbacks battle it out and see who is able to rise to meet the challenge.
As you noted competition at QB is NOT something we have been used to at USF. I believe BJ will utlimately become a better QB thanks to the threat that Eveld brings and I am confident that Eveld could lead this team if there were to be an injury to BJ during the season (hopefully not!). I am also very curious to see what the team does with Gunsby who Holtz recently noted as having "phenomenal talent". Great article!
ReplyDeleteAgreed, Daniels will be the starter unless something dramatic happens. Daniels has the skill set I just worry about his decision making under pressure. Gunsby is a very interesting talent and seems to be impressing everyone right now, don't overlook Floyd either. Thanks for reading the article!
