What is Wrong with USF Basketball Attendance?

Where is everyone?
Sitting at the USF vs. DePaul game, I couldn't help but realize too things. One, I can't believe we won a game (still very critical of this team) and secondly, where is everyone? USF basketball, both men and womens' programs, have the lowest attendance numbers in the Big East, which raises the questions, where the hell is everyone? [Keep reading]

Sousa Firm to Wake Forest

Just a quick update for everyone in USF country as they race between classes and battle each other in line at Subway or the Marshall Center. The Bulls had a visit from 3-star quarterback Kevin Sousa this weekend and there was some speculation that he could be leaning towards USF. But according to Rivals.com, the 6'3" 232-pound QB out of Lake Nona High School in Orlando is firm with his commitment to Wake Forest.

This is not a huge surprise. Sousa is going there for big time academics and playing time, he only took visits this week probably just to see everything else and reconfirm his commitment to the Demon Deacons. The Bulls are now waiting on Joshua Grady, the 3-star athlete that could be a safety or quarterback. USF is battling with Vanderbilt and Wake Forest for him. Wake signing Sousa could make it a Vanderbilt/USF battle. We will have to wait till signing day to see where he will land!

Representing Home

The USF secondary is loaded with talent, but one player in particular comes from the same town where I grew up, Deland, Florida. When I heard that safety Mark Joyce was committed to USF, a part of home was coming to Tampa. Trust me, Deland is not that big of a town, so when someone from there is recruited, it is big news. Joyce made big news in 2010 and looks to do even more heading into 2011.[keep reading]

Simply Amazing, Grothe Addition

Its not football season and Matt Grothe is now in Canada, but this is always fun to watch over and over again. Grothe put USF on the map for good and showed why UCF just can't beat us (should I open up the can of worms that is the UCF/USF "rivalry"?) Hope this gets everyone started this morning and prepared for another great USF week. Go Bulls.

Bulls Fall Again on the Road to Syracuse

While everyone is out enjoying Gaspiralla today in Tampa, the USF ladies suffered a tough loss on the road to Syracuse, 78 to 57. The Bulls were never close in this one as the Orange defended home court and showed that USF is just not there yet as a competitive team against the powers of the Big East this year.

The Bulls shot 39% from the field and 57% from the free throw line, making points a rare occurrence. Andrea Smith once again led the way for the Bulls and was the only player in double figures. She had 23 points, shooting 50% from the field including 5-8 from 3-point range. Porsche Grant and Daleisha Carn each had 8 points. Leondra Doomes-Stephens had 6 points coming off of the bench.

The Bulls are now 10-12 and 1-7 in conference play. They have a week off to prepare for the 9th ranked Notre Dame squad that will be another tough test for the Bulls.

Sky is the Limit for Giddins

Ryne Giddins is becoming a big time player on defense for the Bulls (Picture from TampaBay.com)

Over the past few years, the Bulls have had incredible players at the defensive end position (George Selive and Jason Pierre-Paul). This season saw a young player begin to develop into a dominating pass rusher, Ryne Giddins. The redshirt freshman stepped up this season to help the defensive that lost several starters to the NFL. Now with a full season of experience behind him, Giddins is looking for more entering 2011. [keep reading]

What is Wrong with Famous?

Jarrid Famous has had his playing time decreased this season.
The Bulls got a much needed win last night over DePaul, but one player continues to decline this season, Jarrid Famous. The senior forward/center had a solid 2009-2010 campaign, but in 2010-2011, his numbers are down across the board and by watching him on the court proves the point.[keep reading]

Ladies on the Road at Syracuse Tomorrow

The ladies are taking on the Syracuse Orange. This mascot still creeps me out.

The USF ladies 10-11 (1-6) are back on the road as they take on Syracuse 15-4 (3-3) on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM. While most of you will be enjoying the great weather and pirate craziness at Gaspiralla, the Bulls will be hard at work trying to secure their first Big East road win of the season.

The Bulls are trying to stay at of the bottom and are taking on a very good Orange team that has size down low and can hit from the field. The Bulls have won the last two meetings at Syracuse, but this is not the same USF team and the Orange are much better this season. The Bulls will be led by Andrea Smith, averaging 16.8 points per game, the only Bull averaging double figures this season. She will have to shoot a high percentage and get her teammates more involved. Andrell Smith averages 7.5 points per game as well. Watch for Daleisha Carn and Sasha Bernard, they are coming on late and making an impact.

The Bulls have been hot and cold shooting from the field, so they will have to make a high percentage to stay in this game. They are feeling good off of the win over Seton Hall but have to get their act together on the road in order to keep some postseason hope alive. Good luck ladies!

Bulls Beat Depaul, Stay Out of Big East Basement

The Bulls got a much need Big East win last night over lowly DePaul in the Battle for the Basement at the Sun Dome, 71 to 60. The Bulls came out sloppy in the first half, but were able to build a 10 point lead heading into the half and kept it going as they got the win over the Blue Demons, the 2nd win in conference play.

Hugh Robertson led the way for the Bulls with 16 points, showing his inside and outside game. Jawanza Poland had 11 points, including a monster dunk in the second half to send a message that the Bulls weren't going to lose this one. Augustus Gilchrist had 9 points and 10 rebounds coming off the bench (part of the rotation Heath is using now) and Toarlyn Fitzpatrick had a nice game with 11 points and 5 rebounds. Anderson had 6 points and 2 rebounds, Famous had 6 points and 4 rebounds (add in terrible defense), and Crater had 6 points and 7 assists.

The Bulls played well in this game, moving the ball around, and knocking down shots. They played bad in some parts, but were able to do enough to keep themselves out of the basement in the Big East. Now at 8-14 (2-7), the Bulls next travel to take on Providence next Wednesday at 7 PM. It could be another tough game for the Bulls on the road facing a guard dominated team in the Friars, but for now, the Bulls will build off of this win and hope that the next game continues with some momentum.

Break Out Season Ahead for Landi?

Evan Landi could have a huge season in 2011 after emerging in 2010 (Picture credits: Sun-Sentinel)
The offensive struggled in 2010 under first year coordinator Todd Fitch. With limited wide receivers and a quarterback learning on the job, points were hard to come by. Several players changed positions to help fill the void at wide receiver and one player in particular rose to meet the challenge, Evan Landi. The sophomore was once a quarterback but began the transition to receiver at the end of the last season (2009) and made it his full time position this year (2010) Landi proved to be an excellent receiver and is poised to have a big season in 2011.[keep reading]

Preparing for Tonight - BATTLE FOR THE BOTTOM!

Yes, another Chris Capko picture, listen the guy just wasn't that good (picture credits go to www.gousfbulls.com)

Here we go USF fans, the Bulls are taking on DePaul tonight in a battle between the two worst teams in the Big East. Don't get me wrong, I love my Bulls and support them no matter what, but watching this team and how bad they are on offense just makes me sad. The Bulls lack shooters right now. Crater makes about one shot a night these days (plus turnovers), Poland is hot and cold, Burwell is missing along with Noriega, and Dority and Haynes just can't get onto the court.

The Bulls may win this game, but it will be a close and ugly one. I know the team will have better days and I try my very best to stay up-beat about everything going (new Sun Dome, recruits, etc.) but the facts are cold and straight, this team is just bad.

So I will be at the game tonight, I will support this team in this not-so-epic battle at the bottom of the conference and I will pray to the basketball gods that this team gets a win here and is able to learn and build off of it for the future and for their own pride.

Bulls Targeting Sousa

The Bulls are in looking to add another quarterback to the 2011 recruit class and rumors are they are going after Kevin Sousa, a Wake Forest commitment.

Sousa (6'3" 225-pounds) is a 3-star quarterback prospect out of Lake Nona High School in nearby Orlando, Florida. Sousa is a big, strong quarterback that also has incredible speed, running 4.69 in the 40-yard dash. He has passed for more than 2000 yards and rushed for over a 1000 in his senior year (according to Rivals.com).

Sousa has long been a Wake Forest commit, but USF has been talking to him and he plans to actually visit this weekend for an unofficial visit (according to Scout.com). He also visited Miami last week.

Sousa is similar to Jamius Gunsby the Bulls recruited last season, another big, strong quarterback, but Sousa seems a bit more polished in his passing motion and could be a great pick-up if the Bulls are somehow able to get him to change his mind and commit to the Bulls. The Bulls dropped the offer to Steven Weatherford, so they are trying to get at least one more QB on campus.

Scouting DePaul - Do We Have to Play Again?

Head Coach Oliver Purnell and his DePaul team are just as bad as we are as they had into the "Battle for the Bottom" (Picture from Yahoo.com)
The energy is stirring, it is time for the "Battle of the Bottom"!!!! That's right USF fans, the men's basketball team 7-14 (1-7) in 15th place in the conference is taking on DePaul 6-13 (0-7) and in 16th place. So yes, the worst two teams in the conference are squaring off against each other in an "epic" battle to avoid the complete bottom of the barrel.

Enough joking around, this game is going to be very ugly. Both teams are offensively anemic and now they have to face each other, meaning someone actually will be rewarded a win in this game, hard to imagine. Let's take a look at the DePaul Blue Demons and how the Bulls will matchup against them. [keep reading]

Sorting Out the Running Back Position

Running back Darrell Scott could have a huge season after sitting out last season. (Picture credits go to www.usfnation.com)
As Spring ball fast approaches, there are some interesting position battles that could be coming up. The first one is the running back position. Mo Plancher has graduated, leaving Demetris Murray, Marcus Shaw, and Bradley Battles left battling for position. Mix in transfers Darrell Scott and Dontae Aycock and suddenly the Bulls have a log jam at the position.[keep reading]

Recruiting Update

Coach Skip Holtz and staff are busy trying to get the last few star recruits to commit to USF.
The Bulls have several recruits still on the radar before signing day officially hits. Here is the latest news on some of the top prospects the Bulls are still after (from Rivals and Scout). [keep reading to find out the latest on the top prospects the Bulls are targeting]

Expansion Talk Again? When Will It Stop?

Will the Villanova Wildcats become a conference foe for USF?
Sigh, yes I am talking about conference expansion again and this time it has to deal with the head man himself, Big East commissioner John Marinatto. Marinatto stated yesterday that the Big East will not simply wait for Villanova to decide if it wants to join the Big East when it completes its financial study in April. [keep reading]

Ladies Get 1st Big East Win

The USF ladies got their first Big East win of the season with a 68 to 64 victory over Seton Hall in the Sun Dome.

The Bulls were led by Andrea Smith who had 22 points (9-21 shooting though). Carn had 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks, Grant had 9 points and 7 rebounds, Bernard had 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, and Wynne had 7. The Bulls came out on fire, shooting 60% for early first half, but went cold after halftime and allowed a late Seton Hall run before sealing the deal.

The ladies are now 10-11 (1-6) and ended their 7 game losing streak. They next hit the road to take on a tough Syracuse team on the 29th at 1 PM. Fernandez will be happy with this win after playing sloppy for so many games in a row. Let's see if the ladies can build some momentum after this win and get back to the normal winning ways.

Clarke Liking USF

The Bulls are still working hard on the recruiting trail and a wide receiver they are heavily interested in is Devin Clarke (from Scout.com). Clarke, a 3-star recruit, is a talented receiver that could be an instant impact player for the Bulls.

Clarke (5'11" 165-pounds) out of Sebring, Florida is a talented, fast receiver. He has had 3 straight seasons with over 1000 receiving yards and has 50 career touchdowns. He is a speed demon that can fight for the ball and leave people in the dust.

He recently visited USF and has been quoted (by Scout.com) that he gave his visit a "10 out of 10." He was impressed with everything on the visit, which is a great sign for the Bulls as they try to sure up their first official recruiting class under Holtz.

Clarke would be a nice fit in the system, giving Fitch another weapon at slot receiver and in the return game (Lamar won't be here forever). He has offers from Louisville, Mississippi, UNC, Tennessee, and Texas Tech among others, but he holds USF as one of his top favorites. There is not set date for his announcement (probably signing day) but keep any eye out for his young star.

Remember Those Days...

Anyone remember McHugh Mattis? (Picture credits go to http://www.usfnation.com/)

The season is in free fall at this point and the Bulls take on DePaul this week as they look to get Big East win number 2. The team was great last year, but there are some many things wrong this year and a lot of finger pointing is going around, but the team has to remain focused. The season isn't over. Play the rest of the games, battle hard, and just do what we can. The team may not win another game if they keep playing at this pace, but pride has to come in eventually and get them a win, right?

Ladies Take the Court Tonight

The ladies basketball season continues on as they take on Seton Hall tonight in the Sun Dome at 7 PM. The Bulls are coming off of a tough loss to WVU on the road and have now lost 7 straight games and look to get back on track and earn their first Big East win on the season.

The season is beginning to slip away for Coach Fernandez and this team, but a win against a Big East foe would help get the focus back. The Bulls currently sit in 14th place in the conference while Seton Hall sits dead last at 16th (we have to win here!). The Bulls are 6-4 at home this year so this should help them in their chances tonight.

Andrea and Andrell Smith are great shooters but will have to shoot a higher percentage to help jump start the Bulls offense. Doomes-Stephens and Grant have to dominate inside and give the guards another scoring option. The Bulls have been a bad shooting club, so they will have to get out to a good start and sustain their shooting through the game to get the win. Please come out to the Sun Dome tonight and support the Bulls.

Break Out Season Ahead?

Could Andreas Shields have a break out season in 2011 (Picture credits go to www.gousfbulls.com)

USF changed its offense in 2010 and looks to continue that change and progression into 2011. One position in particular that was rediscovered was the tight end position. For years, USF never seemed to throw to the tight ends, using them just to pass block and spring Grothe free for big runs. But offensive coordinator Todd Fitch wants to use them more in the passing game and he has a good one that could have a break out season for the Bulls, Andreas Shields.[keep reading]

Rontavious Atkins out?

From Greg Auman - The Bulls may have another scholarship available for the class of 2011. Linebacker commit Rontavious Atkins (5'11" 177-pounds) appears to have been offered a gray-shirt if he commits to USF, according to sources (Greg Auman first reported).

Apparently the coaches are worried about his grades and are no longer offering a scholarship. If he were to commit to the Bulls, it would be without a guaranteed scholarship, which is not making him too excited. He may opt for another school if he is promised a scholarship.

This may not a bad deal. The Bulls cannot have players coming into the program with issues such as grades before they even begin day one of class. This is a great sign Holtz is putting his foot down and saying what the program will stand for first. I don't see Atkins coming to USF at this point, he does have several other offers from other programs so he can take his talent somewhere else and the Bulls can go about their ways and find another recruit to bring in.

Beast in the Making

DeDe Lattimore made a big impression during his freshman year (Picture credits go to www.tbo.com)

The Bulls played a lot of freshman in 2010 as Holtz looked for the right personal and for players to emerge to help the team win. One player in particular stepped up and became a monster on defense, freshman linebacker DeDe Lattimore. Lattimore took over the position from senior linebacker Sabbath Joseph and helped energize the USF defense.

Bulls Fall Again

The USF men fell again on the road to WVU, 56 to 46 in a very ugly game. The Bull sonly scored 16 points in the first half as they fell again on the road and overall to 7-14 (1-7).

Augustus Gilchrist was the only Bull in double figures, scoring 20 points, but had 6 turnovers against a solid WVU defense that challenged the Bulls all night and stopped their offense (as if they had any). Jawanza Poland had 9 points but was 3-10 shooting and Ron Anderson Jr. had 6 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bulls just simply had no offense. They played solid defense again as WVU was terrible as well on offense, but the lack of shooting and playmaking ability by the Bulls spelled doom for them. They now will have to take on DePaul in the Sun Dome on Thursday night. The Blue Demons are 6-13 on the season and 0-7 in league play. I would like to say the Bulls can win this one, but after today's performance, I don't know if they can win another game this season.

Ladies Fall Again

The long season just got longer for the USF ladies after they suffered another defeat on the road to WVU, 78 to 52. Andrell Smith had 12 points after she had been cold from the field for several games. Andrea Smith had 16 points, Bernard had 9, and Carn had 8 points.

The game was close in the first half, only traveling by 7 to enter halftime. But cold shooting, mixed with a tough WVU defense and timely shooting spelled doom for the Bulls who have now lost 7 straight games, one of the longest losing streaks in Coach Jose Fernandez's coaching career.

The Bulls are now 9-11 (0-6) in conference play and only a miracle run now will get this team back to its former glory. The team is talented, but losing this many games is hurting their confidence. They next take on Seton Hall on January 25th in the Sun Dome at 7 PM. Seton Hall is a falling program, so this might be a good chance for the ladies to get that first Big East win. Fight on ladies!

Battle at QB Starting in Spring?

So it is still technically winter, but the Spring practices will soon be beginning and one of the positions that should be fun to watch is the quarterback situation. Now heading into the Spring, most everyone is in agreement that B.J. Daniels is the starter and I tend to agree. Daniels shined in the Clemson game and seemed to finally get the offense down. But just because he ended the season on a high note, doesn't mean his seat won't be warm to start 2011.

B.J. Daniels will be entering his junior season and now has a full season under Holtz and Fitch. Daniels struggled most of 2011 with the new offensive system, play calling, and learning to be more of a quarterback instead of running all over the field. It was easy to see at times when Daniels wanted to run, but would stop and try to make a throw into coverage and often was intercepted. Daniels was not having fun, was injured, and was trying to hard instead of calming down and adjusting to the offense. The extra time off before the bowl game seemed to work wonders for him as Daniels finally played in the offense and seemed to have a better understanding of the system. He will be the starter but there are some others that will be pushing him and will keep the coaches watching for the entire season.

Freshman Bobby Eveld, now on scholarship, was huge in the win over Miami. He is a pocket quarterback and is a very athletic player. He played well against UCONN and seems to understand the offense well. He has some mechanic issues with his throwing motion, but appears to be the number two quarterback going into 2011. If Daniels struggles at any point, Holtz won't hesitate to put in Eveld. There are some who want Holtz to make this change, but Daniels gives the team a better chance to win, but if he continues to slide, the change could be made. Eveld will push Daniels this off season and should see some snaps this season.

Freshman Jamius Gunsby is an interesting player. He has the same skill set as B.J. Daniels, but could be an even better passer. He is very athletic, but is still raw in the playbook and the coaches seem hesitant to put him on the field. Watch for him to continue to work in the off season and get better in the play calling. He will push Eveld and Daniels, but should end up as the number 3 quarterback for the Bulls entering the season.

There is also freshman Matt Floyd. Floyd has enrolled early and will be practicing with the team in Spring, but he will be redshirted as he works out, learns the offense, and gets use to college life. He could be a starter in the future, but unless he is beyond amazing and outplays everyone, he won't play a snap this season.

Ladies Take on WVU

The USF ladies are back in action, but once again they are on the road facing a tough opponent in West Virginia. The Bulls are in free fall right now, 9-10 (0-5) and still looking for their first conference win of the season. After several years of postseason tournaments, it appears the Bulls will be at home this Spring.

Andrea Smith has to lead the way for the Bulls in this one as they take on #7 WVU. Smith has been the leader on the Bulls, taking over as the lead scorer. Porsche Grant has been solid inside along with Leondra Doomes-Stephens, but it probably won't be enough on the road for the ladies they hit another buzz saw in the Big East. Both basketball programs are taking on WVU this weekend, but both don't appear ready to leave Morgantown with a W.

I am being a bit harsh on the ladies, but the team is struggling and even Coach Jose Fernandez vented his frustration in his last press conference saying the team works so hard and prepares so well, it is disappointing to continue to loses games and see the reaction of the players after a loss. This is what happens when you face the best basketball conference in the country coach. Fernandez has done a great job in his tenure at USF, but this season is just not his year. His team is not as loaded at it has been with Jessica Dickson and Shantia Grace, but the Bulls will fight on.

Scouting West Virginia

The Bulls are on the road again to take on #21 West Virginia in Morgantown, not an easy place for anyone to get a win, but especially this team. The Bulls are 7-13 (1-6) and just lost an ugly game to Rutgers, one of the bottom dwellers in the conference. Our reward for losing that game, a road trip to face another ranked opponent in the toughest basketball conference in the nation. Let's take a look at the WVU lineup and which Bulls will have to step up in order for the team to stay in the building.

WVU is led by guard Casey Mitchell (6'4" 220-pounds). Mitchell averages 16.8 ppg and shoots 37.7% from 3-point range. The Bulls will be hard pressed to guard him, watch for Poland and company to try to matchup with him during the game. Daniel Bryant, guard (6'2" 195-pounds), is the trigger man for WVU, averaging 12.1 ppg and 3.5 assist per game. He will be the main match up for Crater at the point guard position and this could be a long night for Crater who seems to be returning to his old turnover self from the start of the season.

Inside, the Bulls have the size advantage again, but will face very athletic big men for WVU. Forward Kevin Jones (6'8" 260-pounds) averages 13.8 ppg and 6.9 rebounds per game. The Bulls are one of the top rebounding teams in the league but will be hard presses to own the battle on the boards. Forward John Flowers (6'7" 215-pounds) is another athletic big man, averaging 7 ppg and 6 rebounds per game. He will try to match up with Gilchrist and take him out of his game. Watch out for freshman David Nyarsuk from Sudan.

Let's be honest, the Bulls are just bad right now. There is a lot of guessing and finger pointing to why the team is bad this year, but the end result is how the team players on the court. After watching how they played against Rutgers, it will take a miracle for the Bulls to get a win in Morgantown. Final score prediction: WVU 77 USF 64

Q&A Before the WVU Game Today

Hey everyone, I took some time to get a little behind the lines information from a WVU fan, Jim Ashley, before the Bulls take on WVU this afternoon. Here is what he had to say about the WVU and what USF can expect heading into Morgantown.

What is the crowd like in Morgantown for a home basketball game? Is it as intense as a football game or as crazy as a Duke home crowd?Well, when the Coliseum is packed, it's loud and intense. The student section is crazy (but, they're not Cameron Crazies-level yet, unfortunately) and it can get NUTS in there, just like it did last Sunday when Purdue came to town.

What style of offense does WVU run? Do they tend to run more set plays, use pressure like the Cardinals do, or does Huggins allow them to create?
Historically, Bob Huggins has ran a "cut and fill" motion offense. Of course, you can't expect to run a play on every trip up the floor. Huggins has ALWAYS emphasized a physical game, which is the exact thing you need to survive in Big East Basketball.

Who is the biggest shooting threat on the WVU team?
Matt, us Mountaineer fans are still trying to figure that one out. For a while, we thought it was Casey Mitchell... but, he's pretty much disappeared since the Puerto Rico Invitational. As you can tell, losing Da'Sean Butler really stings.

Who is one player that not many talk about, but is a huge crowd favorite and can energize the team? Deniz Kilicli and John Flowers are talked about, but those are the huge crowd favorites. Flowers because he's goofy (yet is a good forward, can block shots, etc) and Kilicli because he's the "Istan Bull" and has a lot of raw talent. Still very unpolished.

What will the final score be? USF has pushed Villanova, Louisville, and took UCONN to overtime this season. It wouldn't surprise me if USF pushes WVU to the limit this Sunday. Hell, WVU almost lost to freakin' DePaul!

WVU- 63
USF- 57

Better Days Ahead?

Who remembers Melvin Buckley?
Just another fun image from the past, anyone remember Melvin Buckley? The way the USF offense is scoring these days (went nearly 7 minutes against Rutgers without a bucket), we could use Melvin Buckley right about now. I am trying to stay optimistic right now. The team has shown signs of life, but continues to slump when they should rise and rise when they should get destroyed. This team is just difficult to figure out and the season is just heading South at this point. All we can do is continue to cheer for the team, support our school, and try to have some fun with our lousy basketball play. Until then, I will continue to find fun old school basketball photos to make some of us laugh, cry, or remember the dark days. We can't be as bad as we use to be, right? (Picture credits go to http://www.gousfbulls.com/)

Watson Not Visiting FSU

From Rivals.com - Defensive tackle Elkino Watson, the 6'2" 275-pound, 4-star recruit has reportedly canceled his plans to visit FSU on the 21st. Watson visited USF last weekend and appeared to enjoy his time on campus. He has been in close contact with the coaches as well.

What does this mean for USF? Watson is a big time defensive tackle and the fact that he has canceled his visit to one of the schools he highly favored is a good sign for USF. He enjoyed his time and the connection with the coaching staff, which have been on a roll recently, helps improves the Bulls chances. There is no apparent date set for his announcement, but this is a favorable sign for the Bulls. Watson still favors UF and a few other teams, but USF is high on his list. Keep your fingers crossed.

Bull Fall to Rutgers 62 to 71

The Bulls lost again on the road to Rutgers last night, 62 to 71. The Bulls offense was simply terrible. It wasn't until 6 minutes into the game did Anthony Crater, of all players, scored a long range 3-pointer. The Bulls struggled with an aggressive Rutgers defense, battling pressure, and being forced to settle for outside shots. The Bulls took the lead late, but once again, fell apart late.

Anthony Crater had 9 points, 4 assists, and 4 turnovers. He struggled all night to stay in front of the Rutgers guards and made too many costly turnovers. Fitzpatrick was 0-4 from the field after having a few solid performances in the past few games. Gilchrist had 14 points, but struggled to dominate inside against an undersized Rutgers team. Poland had 11 points but was 3-14 shooting, getting rejected by the rim on a dunk attempt (just that kind of night). Robertson had 14 points.

The Bulls just could not get anything going on offense. Hand it to Rutgers who had a game plan to take the USF big men out of their comfort zone and force the USF guards to handle the game, something we simply can't do. Burwell, Noriega, Crater, and Poland all struggled and the USF offense came to a stop.

Now at 7-13 (1-6) in Big East play, the Bulls will travel to Morgantown to take on #21 West Virginia on Saturday at 2 PM. This season is getting hard to watch and a road trip against a ranked opponent is not what the Bulls need right now as they have yet to win a game on the road this season.

Who Misses Chris Capko?

The Bulls lost tonight to Rutgers. I am speechless, I am angry, I am sad. I will have a full recap of the loss tomorrow morning on the Bull Rush, but this image is just for tonight. I promised I would reflect on the terrible past of the USF basketball team, featuring Chris Capko, and so it begins. This team just simply can't put it together. 7-13? The team is in free fall at this point and a road trip to WVU on Saturday is going to be rough, much, much, more to come, but for tonight, as we all ask WHY, enjoy the image and the haunting memories of the past.

Bulls Land Another WR Commit

From Greg Auman - The Bulls continue to put together a solid recruiting class as they have received a verbal commitment from wide receiver Ruben Gonzalez out of Robinson High School here in Tampa.

Gonzalez, 6'3" 200-pounds, is a big receiver that is being recruited as an "athlete," he can play either wide receiver or defensive back (3-star recruit). He is has a big frame and impressive speed, 4.61 in the 40 yard dash (Rivals.com). He also have offers from Purdue, Minnesota, and Iowa State, among others.

This is the second local commit to USF in the last week, joining wide receiver Andre Davis. Holtz originally stated he wanted to put up a wall around the area and keep the local prospects close to home and he seems to be doing an excellent job so far. This is a huge commit for USF as they reload the skill position on offense and build a solid foundation for the future.

Please Watch the Game Tonight

The season has been rough so far, but it is not as bad as it use to be, remember these two?

The Bulls are taking the court tonight as they begin a very critical 4-game stretch. After a home win over Providence and the first conference win of the season, the Bulls are hoping to keep it going as they take on Rutgers tonight on ESPN 2.

At 7-12 (1-5) the Bulls won't be heading to any postseason (unless there is a miracle) but the team is hoping to build some momentum and win some games as the season continues on. They are taking on Rutgers team that isn't that good and the Bulls have some confidence back.

Key players like Augustus Gilchrist, Jarrid Famous, and Anthony Crater are beginning to play better. Others like JAWANZA Poland, Ron Anderson, and Toarlyn Fitzpatrick are beginning to shine as well and putting together better performances.

The season is not over, despite the poor home attendance (as usual) and the bad record. The Bulls are playing for next year, building as a unit, and playing for some pride as well. The Bulls will be better next season, so take some time tonight to watch the game. It'll be a close game as usual, but you will begin to see the talent that is on the roster and how the team is developing with every dribble and every bucket scored. Please tune and forever, GO BULLS!

Angelo Hadley to USF? Not So Fast My Friend!

Not so fast my friend! As Lee Corso says, Angelo Hadley may not be a Bull as a few sites are reporting.
There are a few sites out on the web (ESPN, Scout, and Rivals) that are reporting that safety Angelo Hadley has committed to the Bulls and has visited the campus as well. But according to Greg Auman and other sources, this is a false statement and Hadley is not coming to USF, at least so far.

The 6' 205-pound safety out of Butler Community College is rated as a 3-star recruit according to Rivals.com and was a former UNC commit before legal troubles ended his chances there. He has been playing well at Butler C.C, playing in 10 games, totaling 49 tackles and 2 interceptions (according to the school's site).

It is odd that various sources say he is committed and took a visit and other sources saying none of this is true and he could end up at another school. I believe he is not committed yet to USF, but could be in the running. We will have to wait to signing day to find out if the rumors on either side are correct or not.

Right on Target

Maikon Bonani has overcome injury and competition to become the Bulls great place kicker.
The Bulls for years struggled at place kicking and most of the agony was due to one man, Delbert Alvarado. I am sure there are plenty out there that will rush to his defense and he did have some good games for the Bulls, but on the consistent basis, he was not good (remember the Auburn game?). But a game against Kansas 2 years ago, changed all of that, when Maikon Bonani hit a game winning 47-yard field goal for the Bulls. Since then, Bonani survived a freak accident and has returned to stabilize the Bulls kicking position.[keep reading]

Scouting the Rutgers Game

The Bulls will have to slow down senior Jonathan Mitchell (picture credits: www.scarletknights.com)

The Bulls finally got off the losing streak and got a much needed win over Providence on Sunday and now take to the road again as they take on Rutgers on ESPN 2 at 7 PM (how on earth did we get on television?) The Bulls 7-12 (1-5) finally got the first conference win of the season and are hoping to build off of that win as they take on Rutgers, 10-7 (1-4). The battle to avoid the bottom of the conference is now on! [keep reading]

Lejiste Delivering the Pain

Jon Lejiste has become a big time hitter for the Bulls (Picture credits go to http://www.usfnation.com/)
I have done several profiles on the USF secondary players, but there is another player that has been improving the past two years and could be a big time playmaker in 2011, safety Jon Lejiste. Lejiste has become an enforcer in the USF secondary, landing punishing hits to any ball carrier that is unfortunate enough to get in his path. [keep reading]

Leavitt Headed to San Fracisco

From Greg Auman and ESPN - Former USF head coach Jim Leavitt has joined the San Francisco 49er's as their new linebacker coach. Leavitt finally reached a settlement with USF and is now headed to the West Coach to get back into coaching.

Leavitt was always a defensive minded coach and great teacher and should be a good fit in the NFL and with the 49er's. New head coach Jim Harbaugh is a tough coach and demands fundamentals and toughness, something Leavitt will bring to the linebacking corps, a unit that is already solid (Patrick Willis).

There were some talks that Leavitt could end up with Kansas State, where he began his coaching roots and eventually take over once Bill Snyder decides to retire again. This is still a possibility for Leavitt, the linebacker coach position could be a one and done deal before Leavitt heads back to the college ranks, but his move to San Francisco should be a good one for him as he gets back to what he loves to do, coach.

Good luck to Leavitt.

Land of No Return by Delbert Alvarado Featuring Mike Ford, Theo Wilson and K.

It is early morning and everyone is busy getting to work, but take a few minutes to listen to this classic song. Football season is still far away, but practices will begin soon, signing day is coming, and the time for football will return. Until then, enjoy this good old song.

Long Road Traveled

Kevin Gidrey played only one season for the Bulls after transferring from ECU.
Coach Skip Holtz took over the Bulls in 2010 after great success at ECU. But he wasn't alone when he made the trip to Tampa. Tight end Kevin Gidrey decided to follow his coach and continue his education at USF and also his playing career. [keep reading]

Aycock Ready to Go

Former Auburn running back Donate Aycock is ready to start his career at USF.

The Bulls enter the 2011 season with a new weapon in the backfield, Dontae Aycock. The running back from Auburn transferred last season and had to sit out the season due to NCAA guidelines and has undergone knee surgery as well. But heading into the Spring, Aycock is healthy, eligible, and could have a big season for the Bulls. [keep reading]

Ladies Fall Again

The USF ladies fell again in Big East play, 61 to 55 to Marquette. The Bulls, now 9-10 (0-5) have hit a rough part and are now under .500 after starting out solid this season. The road and conference games are simply hurting the Bulls as their offense can't seem to get consistent play.

Andrea Smith had a solid game for the Bulls, scoring 17 points and Leondra Doomes-Stephens had 13 points. The Bulls could not find another shooter for the game and failed to get enough points as Marquette simply played their game and got the win in the Sun Dome.

The Bulls must now take their losing streak, now at 8 games, on the road to take on #7 West Virginia on Saturday at 4 PM. Coach Fernandez has his work cut out for him if the Bulls don't want to get hurt in this game, it could get ugly.

Bulls Pick Up a Wide Receiver

From Greg Auman - The Bulls got a big time commitment from the weekend from wide receiver Andre Davis. The 6'1" 180-pound receiver from Jefferson High school declared on his facebook and text messages that he will be playing football for USF and is ready to get to work for the Bulls in the Big East.

Davis, a 3-star prospect according to Rivals.com and a 4-star recruit from Scout.com is a huge commitment for the Bulls as they look to add playmaking ability on the offense. Davis had offers from Arkansas, West Virginia, Texas Tech, among other. Davis is a slender receiver that runs great routes and has great hands, making him an ideal receiver down the field. He does not have the explosive burst off the line, but understands the position and will become a big time playmaker for the Bulls. He will probably redshirt this season but will become an instant star for the Bulls.

Bulls Get Win Over Providence

The losing streak is finally over as the Bulls finally got a much needed win, 79 to 72 against Providence. The Bulls 7-12 (1-5) finally got a Big East win and are hoping to build off of this solid victory at home in the Sun Dome.

Jarrid Famous had a big game for the Bulls with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Ron Anderson Jr. had 8 points, JAWANZA Poland had 13 points despite struggling from the field, Hugh Robertson had 17 points, and Anthony Crater had 6 assists as he continues to get better at the point position. Fitzpatrick had a nice game off the bench scoring 10 points and Gilchrist again came off the bench but scored 10 points.

This is a great win for the Bulls as they now can put the losing streak and the Big East streak off their minds and get back to work as they try to ger some solid wins as the season continues on. The Bulls are on the road on Thursday as they take on Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are not a powerhouse in the Big East so the Bulls will have a chance on the road.

Clavion Nelson Commits to USF

From Greg Auman - The USF recruiting weekend heats up as defensive end Calvion Nelson has committed to Coach Skip Holtz for the class of 2011.

Nelson, 6'4" 225-pound defensive end, rated a 3-star recruit according to Rivals.com, helps give the Bulls a potential force on the defensive line. With Craig Marshall heading to the NFL and the youth on the line with Giddins, Forte, and company, the Bulls needed to add depth to the position and Nelson helps fit that need.

Nelson has a large frame and nice explosion off of the line. He will probably redshirt this season and add more weight to deal with the large offensive tackles in the Big East but he could be a big time player in the very near future. This is a great signing for Holtz.

The Bulls could have more commits after this weekend, so stay tuned to any more updates as they come in.

Come to the Sun Dome Today!

So the NFL playoffs are in full swing and most people want to watch some incredible games, but you should head to the Sun Dome instead today. The USF men return home to take on the Providence Friars at noon today. Remember USF students, the game is free for you to attend, so no excuses, especially if you live on campus. Tickets are as low as $8 and children under 17 get in free, yes free, so parents, bring your kids out and let them scream for a good cause. The Bulls need your help to get off of this 7 game losing streak, so please come to the Dome today.

But don't leave after the men's game. The USF ladies will be taking on Marquette in a big time Big East showdown for the Bulls. The ladies are 9-8 and need a conference win and will need the support of the home crowd to help give them a boost on the court. Just like the men's game, this game is free for students, so stick around and enjoy the games and show your support for the Bulls today.

JAWANZA!!

The USF basketball season for the men's team is beginning to turn South. 7 straight losses have the team at the bottom of the conference despite playing close and hard in all of their games. One of the newcomers to the 2011 squad however continues to have a solid, highlight reel season thus far, Jawanza Poland.

Poland, a junior college transfer from Hutchinson Community College (Kansas City) has become a spark plug on the court for the Bulls. The 6'4" 200-pound guard is averaging 10.2 points per game and 1.7 assists per game (shooting 22% from 3-point range though).

Poland is a high flying scorer, able to shoot from range or drive to the hoop (hopefully everyone has seen his dunk from the Cincinnati game). He has started and come off the bench this season for Coach Heath, giving the Bulls much needed offense and providing an up-tempo style of play. Poland is a very aggressive player at both ends of the court, which can lead to foul problems. He needs to play more under control, but his fast style and aggressive style of play is something the Bulls need.

Jawanza still has 2-years left of eligibility after this season, giving Heath a great scorer he can coach up and help lead the team in the near future. Poland has already become a fan favorite (and a bloggers best friend, JAWANZA!!). He will continue to help the Bulls and shine this season despite the recent losses and tough schedule ahead. Poland looks to get his game going today as the Bulls take on Providence at noon in the Sun Dome.

Eveld Gets Scholarship

From Greg Auman - Walk-on freshman quarterback Bobby Eveld got an unexpected surprise tonight as he was given a scholarship by Coach Skip Holtz.

The 6'5" 200-pound quarterback out of Jesuit High School led the Bulls to the victory over Miami and got one start against UCONN when BJ Daniels was injured.

This is a great gesture by Holtz, acknowledging that Eveld is a legit quarterback and could be in the running for the starting job next season. With Weatherford no longer committed to USF, it gave Holtz an available scholarship and he decided it was best to give it to Eveld.

I'm glad Eveld got a scholarship. The former catching prospect was originally headed to the MLB, but decided instead to go to college, but it was too late in the recruiting process to get a scholarship offer, so he walked-on to USF and the Bulls benefited from his decision. Eveld is a good quarterback, strong arm, and seems to be able to get the offense moving when given time. He will push to be the starter in what should be in open competition or at least a few more eyes will be on him come Spring.

UCONN Has a New Head Coach

The Big East has a coaching carousel it seems and it continues to spin around as the UCONN Huskies have hired former Syracuse head coach Paul Pasqualoni to take over after Randy Edsall ditched them for Maryland (not a class act anymore, couldn't even fly back with the team after the Fiesta bowl).

The 61-year old coach was 107-59 in his tenure at Syracuse, going to a few bowl games, but seemingly underachieving his entire time there. Since 2004, he has been in the NFL, most recently with the Dallas Cowboys.

The UCONN fan base doesn't seem to thrilled about this signing and rightly so (could of had Whipple from Miami, at least more offense there). Pasqualoni is a solid coach and is a native of UCONN, so he is returning home.

This really doesn't mean much for USF, but perhaps a few recruits that have committed to UCONN that are Florida natives may take a second look at USF and decide to reconsider where they are heading. The crazy world of the Big East continues to roll on.

Scouting for the Providence Game

Here we go again, the Bulls, 6-12 (0-5) and losers of 7 straight are back at home to take on the 11-7 (0-5) Providence Friars (yes, the Friars). This is a showdown between two of the bottom dwellers in the Big East and a chance for the Bulls to try to get a victory at home and avoid last place. The game is tomorrow in the Sun Dome so make sure to come out and cheer them on, game starts at noon. Also stay after for the 3:30 game as the USF ladies take on Marquette.

The Friars are led by Marshon Brooks. Brooks leads the team with 23.2 ppg. The 6'5" 190-pound guard-forward is a dangerous shooter (35% from 3-point range). He can drive to the hop and create his own shot, which makes him the priority to shut down for USF. The Bulls will also have to watch out for 6'2" 180-pound guard Vincent Council who averages 15 ppg and 6.4 assists per game. Inside, Bilal Dixon, 6'8" 228-pounds (forward-center) averages 6.6 ppg and 8.1 rebounds per game and will be the key matchup for the USF big men such as Famous and Anderson.

The Friars are ranked 17th in rebounding in the country and average 78 points per game. USF is 67 in rebounding and 300th (wow, oh wow) in total scoring. The Bulls will have to win the battle in the paint in order to secure rebounding and get the ball moving to the perimeter when the Friars collapse the paint and try to shutdown the USF inside game.

This game is so hard to call. The Friars pushed Syracuse to the edge but were blown out by West Virginia by 30 points, so which Friar team shows up? The Bulls have been playing well, pushing every team to the max and keeping it close or leading at times against ranked foes (Villanova, Louisville, and Cincinnati). The Bulls are home for this one, but will need to fire up the home crowd (raise your hand if you are going!). Gilchrist has to come up big, Crater has to play the point well and get on people on defense, and JAWANZA Poland will have to stay out of foul trouble long enough to get something going on offense. I can't believe it, I am going with the Bulls in this one: USF 72 Providence 66

Just a note here, if the Bulls do lose this game, the Robert McCullum and Chris Capko references will begin, no one wants that to happen, so better cheer for the Bulls.

Anyone Remember This Guy?

Who remembers Solomon Jones? (Picture credits go to www.usfnation.com)
Just a trip down memory lane. Solomon Jones use to be a high-flying dunker for the Bulls and now is part of the Indiana Pacers. The Bulls could use his scoring ability as the continue to struggle this season. Let's all pray they turn it around Sunday.

The Influence of Joseph

Sabbath Joseph was a great leader on and off the field for the Bulls. (Picture credits go to www.usfnation.com)

The Bulls defense was led by the senior class that displayed leadership both on and off the field. One of the many great leaders was linebacker Sabbath Joseph. Joseph, came into the season as a starter, but took a step back on the depth chart for freshman DeDe Lattimore when coaches asked him. Even with reduced playing time, Joseph continued to be one of the great leaders for the team in 2010. [keep reading]
