USF Basketball Lands Verbal Commitment from FAU: Forward Kore White

The Bulls received news today that former FAU forward Kore White (6-8 245-pounds) who has one year of eligibility left, will play for USF and Coach Heath next season (will attend grad school) (per Greg Auman).

White averaged 7.7 points per game last year, 4.5 rebounds per game, .5 assists per game, and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting 42% from the floor.

White will join Waverly Austin, Toarlyn Fitzpatrick, Jordan Omogbehin, and incoming freshman Zac LeDay, giving the Bulls a lot of depth and talent on the front line, something that will be needed in the tough Big East.

This is a great addition to the USF family.  Coach Heath stills have one scholarship available for the 2012 class after losing out on Sam Cassell Jr. last weekend, but at this point, he may keep that scholarship for next year's class.  Welcome to the USF family Kore.

Top Defensive Players from 2011

After looking at the top five players on offense, it is time to shift to the defensive side of the ball and look at the top five players on defense.  The Bulls ranked among the best in the nation in run defense and were one of the best at tackling people in the backfield.  Let's see who makes the list, starting with number five.

USF Baseball Avoids the Sweep, Beats Villanova

The Bulls were able to avoid the sweep as they beat the Wildcats 3 to 1 improving their record to 29-16 (12-6) on the year.

Derrick Stultz went 7.1 innings, allowing just 3 hits, 1 run, walking 2 batters and struck out 3 batters.  Austin Adams went two thirds of an inning, striking out 1 batter.  Nick Gonzalez came in for the 9th inning, allowing 1 hit and struck out 1 batter to end the game.

The offense was able to come up clutch for the Bulls.  James Ramsay went 2 for 4 with a run scored and stole a base.  Jimmy Falla went 1 for 3, driving in a run and scored a run.  Kyle Teaf went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.  Kyle Copack, getting the start at 3rd base, went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The Bulls will hit the road to take on St. John's this coming weekend on the road, starting Friday at 6PM.  It will be a huge game for the Bulls as they look to continue to stay in the hunt for the Big East title race.

USF Softball Completes the Sweep of Villanova

It went to the bottom of the 7th inning, but the USF ladies were able to beat Villanova with a 3 to 2 score to complete the 3-game sweep.  The Bulls are 44-8 (16-3) as they look to wrap up the season on a strong note heading into the Big East tournament.

Six Former Bulls Sign Undrafted Free Agent Contracts

For the first time since 2006, no USF Bulls heard their name called in the NFL draft.  While it is a bit disappointing not to hear a name called, 6 Bulls have already signed undrafted free agent contracts with NFL teams.

USF Baseball Drops Second Straight Game to Villanova

The Bulls rallied late, but were unable to get the win, falling 6 to 7 and dropping to 28-15 (11-5) on the season.  USF have dropped two straight games now, falling out of the Big East race and will have to fight to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon.

Joey Lovecchio struggled again, going just 4.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, 5 runs, and walked 2 batters.  Mike Clarkson went .2 innings, allowing 1 hit.  Adrian Puig went .2 innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 runs.  Janick Serrallonga went 1.1 innings, striking out 2 batters.  Austin Adams went 1.1 innings, allowing 1 walk and struck out 2 batters.  Nick Gonzalez went .2 innings, walking 1 and struck out 1.

James Ramsay went 3 for 5 with an RBI.  Todd Brazeal went 1 for 4 with an RBI.  Jimmy Falla went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.  Andrew Longley continued his power streak.  He went 2 for 4 with a home run and drove in 3 runs.  Kyle Teaf went 2 for 3 with a triple.

The Bulls will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow as they take the field at 1PM.  USF really needs to get a win tomorrow to continue to stay in the hunt for a regular season Big East title.

USF Softball Sweeps Double Header Against Villanova

The USF Bulls took on Villanova for a big double header as the season comes to the end.  The team was able to take both games on the strength of their pitching staff as they improve to 43-8 (15-3) on the season.

Final Regular Season Home Series for USF softball

It's the last home stand of the regular season for the USF ladies.  They have had a tremendous season so far and have a lot of softball ahead of them, but it's right to honor the seniors that will be taking the field for the last time in the regular season.  Let's see who the senior class as thank them for everything they have done to make this one of the most successful programs at USF.

USF Softball Takes on Villanova

The USF softball team, 41-8 (13-3), gets back to Big East play as they host Villanova over the weekend for 3-games (final regular season home stand of the season as well).

Nova enters the series at 30-20, but are just 4-12 in Big East play and 10-8 away from home.  This will be a strong chance for the Bulls to get back to work in conference play (double header is Saturday, 2PM and 4PM, the series ends Sunday at 1PM, also senior night).

USF Baseball Falls 2 to 3 to Villanova

The USF Bulls, coming off of a big win against Florida on Tuesday, came up just short against Villanova, falling 2 to 3.  The Bulls are now 28-15 (11-5) on the season, dropping them back slightly in their hunt for the Big East title.

Andrew Barbosa was dealing in the game, working 8 strong innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and struck out 11 batters (showcasing that strong arm).  Adrian Puig worked the 9th inning, striking out 2 batters.

Alex Mendez went 1 for 4 with an RBI single.  Luis Llerena went 2 for 5.  Todd Brazeal went 1 for 3 with a run scored and Andrew Longley went 1 for 3 with another run scored, but it wasn't enough to help support a strong outing by Barbosa.

The Bulls will look to get a win tomorrow when they take the field at 6PM.

USF vs. Rutgers Game Set for Thursday Night

We assume this was Holtz's reaction when he heard the game vs. Rutgers had been scheduled for Thursday night.

It was expected and dreaded and now it is a reality.  USF's Big East opener against Rutgers on Thursday September 13 has been scheduled for 7:30PM on ESPN.

USF Baseball Takes on Villanova

The USF Bulls, 28-14 (11-4), are coming off of a big win against the 4th ranked Gators as they return home and return to Big East action.  The Bulls host Villanova this weekend as they look to move ahead in the standings, but it won't be easy.

Villanova comes into the series with a 23-9 (6-9) record and are 10-10 away from home this year.  This will be a key series for the Bulls if they want to keep pace in the Big East regular season title race.  Let's take a look at what the Wildcats bring to the field (first game tonight begins at 7PM, the game on Saturday is scheduled for 6PM, and the series wraps up on Sunday at 1PM).

Top 5 Offensive Players from 2011: Number 1

We have reached the top offensive performer from the 2011 season.  While the offensive line, wide receivers, and running backs had huge seasons and could vie for the top spot, there is one player that is at the top of the list, any guess who it could possibly be?

Thursday, April 26, 2012

Top 5 Offensive Players from 2011: Number 2

At number two on the top five offensive players from 2011 countdown, we stay at the wide receiver position and take a look at the top target for Daniels last year, Sterling Griffin.

USF Softball Beats Bethune Cookman

After the weekend off, the USF ladies got back to work as they took on Bethune Cookman, beating them 3 to 1 to improve their overall record to 41-8 (13-3) on the season.

Sam Greiner got the start, working 4 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 2 batters, improving her record to 10-4 on the season.  Lindsey Richardson worked 3 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and struck out 6 (great to see her back in the rotation, will be huge for the stretch run).

The offense got the job done tonight.  Jessica Mouse went 1 for 2 with a bunt that drove in a run.  Laura Fountain drove in another and Alexis Nowell went 1 for 2 with an RBI.  Stephanie Medina was 1 for 2 as well.

The Bulls were able to recover a bit in this game after a rough series against Louisville.  The Bulls are still battling for the regular season Big East title, so every game is key down the stretch.  The ladies have a chance to notch some conference wins as they host Villanova over the weekend starting with a double header on Saturday (2PM and 4PM).

USF Softball Gets Back to Work Against Bethune Cookman

After a weekend off, the Bulls, 40-8 (13-3) get back to work as they look to defend home turf against Bethune Cookman.  BC is 24-23 on the season (9-0 in the MEAC), they are just 7-6 away from Daytona this season, so the rested Bulls should be ready to get back to work after a bit of a rough series last time out against Louisville (game starts at 5PM).

Top 5 Offensive Players from 2011: Number 3

At number three on the countdown, we will move away from the backfield and look to the outside for the next player on the list.  There are a lot of wide receivers that came up big for USF, but let's see who rose above on the list.

USF Baseball Upsets the Gators

The Bulls hit the road to take on the 4th ranked Gators and came away with a huge upset win, 5 to 3, handing the Gators only their second loss to a Florida school this season.  The Bulls are now 28-14 (11-4) after this huge win.

USF Baseball Takes on Florida

The USF Bulls, 27-14 (11-4), take a break from conference play, but face a huge test as they hit the road for a one game non-conference match-up against the 1st ranked Florida Gators (game starts at 7PM).  The Gators are 31-9 (11-7) on the season and are 21-4 at home, posing a huge challenge for the Bulls.  Let's see what they will be facing in this game.

Top 5 Offensive Performers from 2011: Number 4

At number five on the offensive countdown of the top performers from 2011, we saw the offensive line get the credit they deserve. Now we take a look at number four, a running back that decided to hop to the NFL early after a strong season for the Bulls, Darrell Scott.

USF Lands Defensive End Transfer from Notre Dame

The Bulls have landed one of the biggest transfers in program history. Freshman defensive end Aaron Lynch, the former 4-star recruit who played last season at Notre Dame, will transfer to USF according to Coach Holtz, Josh Newberg (247 Sports), several other sources.  Lynch has signed his scholarship paper and will enroll for the Summer B session starting on June 25th (per Andy Staples).

Top Five Offensive Players from 2011

Now that spring football is over, the long wait for the 2012 season begins.  While we wait, it's a good time to take a look back at some of the top performers from the 2011 season.  The despite the disappointing 5-7 record, there were still plenty of great individual players on both sides of the ball for the Bulls.  We will start on the offensive side of the ball and begin by looking at the top 5 performers on offense.  Here is number 5.

Pitching Staff Must Rise Down the Stretch

The USF Bulls are 40-8 (13-3) on the season, but are coming off a rough series against the Louisville Cardinals.  As the Bulls head down the stretch, the strength of the team, the pitching staff, will have to rise and the return of Lindsey Richardson will be key for the ladies.

USF Baseball Gets Win in Game 3 of the Series

The Bulls took the field against the Louisville Cardinals yesterday as they tried to sneak in a complete game, but they were only able to get 7 innings in before the game was postponed till today, but maybe the rain delay was good.  Yesterday, the Bulls were down 1 to 12 before it was called.

Final Spring Game Scrimmage Thoughts

Andre Davis continued his strong spring yesterday (Picture: www.gousfbulls.com)
The Bulls took the field for the last time this spring as they wrapped up their spring practices under the lights of Raymond James Stadium (rain decided to hold off today for the game).

Five Players to Watch in Final Spring Game

After taking the field last Saturday on campus, the Bulls return to the field, this time under the bright lights of Raymond James Stadium (game slated for 6PM, rain could be in the area however).  The Bulls did a lot of good things in their last scrimmage, but there are a lot of areas they need to work on.  Here are 5 players and 5 areas they need to work on in this last scrimmage before the fall camp begins later this year.

USF Falls to Louisville

After a 70+ minute rain delay tonight, the Bulls came up just short to Louisville, falling 5 to 6 to the Cardinals.  The Bulls are now 26-13 (10-3) on the year and had their chances in this game, but just couldn't stop the Cardinals from scoring late.

Andrew Barbosa got the start for the Bulls.  He worked 6.1 innings, allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and struck out 8.  He sat through the long rain delay but was able to come back out and continue to attack the strike zone.  Austin Adams worked 1 inning, allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, and struck out 2 (not his best outing).  Andrew Loynaz worked .2 innings, striking out 1.  Adrian Puig worked two thirds of an inning.  Kyle Parker worked one third of an inning, allowing 1 run and struck out 2.

The offense did enough, but couldn't come up late in the 9th inning.  Alex Mendez went 1 for 5 with a run scored and drove in one run.  James Ramsay went 2 for 4 with an RBI.   Jimmy Fall went 1 for 4 with an RBI and Kyle Teaf went 2 for 4.

The Bulls will try to take the field tomorrow at noon (weather is a huge factor).  They will look to rebound after this performance and continue to battle for the Big East regular season title.

2nd Spring Football Depth Chart Released

It's time for the final scrimmage of the spring and as the Bulls prepare to hit the field under the bright lights of Raymond James Stadium, Holtz and staff put out a second chart for the game.  Remember, these are just spring depth charts and a lot will happen between now and the start of the 2012 season, but it's fun to take a look at it.

1st Ever Bull Rush Contest

Coach Holtz is very excited for this contest and what you could win.
With football season still a few months away, there aren't many chances to get to Raymond James Stadium during the summer, but we are changing that with a new contest give-away.

USF Baseball Returns Home to Take on Louisville

USF baseball, coming off of a strong win on the road against Bethune Cookman on Tuesday night, finally returns home to take on Louisville in a huge Big East showdown.

USF, 26-12 (10-2), sits in first place in the Big East standings, but the Louisville Cardinals are right behind them at 26-11 (8-4) and are coming off of a huge 21 to 4 win over Indiana.  This 3-game series could determine who wins the regular season Big East title (first game tonight starts at 7PM, second game is Saturday at 12 NOON, and the series ends on Sunday with a 1PM showdown).

The Saturday game has been moved to 12 noon due to the bad weather expected in Tampa tomorrow (rain chances expected to be close to 80% tomorrow with severe weather, so bring your gloves and a canoe).

Bulls Bits

Senior linebacker Sam Barrington had some interesting comments on the USF Magazine Show this morning on 1010 CBS Sports Radio.

Here are a few notes that are floating around about USF, let's get caught up on the latest.

Defensive tackle Cory Grissom, who is having surgery on the fractured fibula near his right ankle, is expected to be out for 3 months, meaning he could return to the team this fall and still play.  This is great news for the defensive line that moved Elkino Watson into his spot during practice the other day.  The unit is a little thin at experience, so having Pork Chop back this year will be huge.  If he can't return, he can take a medical redshirt and return for 2013.

USF Softball Drops Both Games of Double Header to Louisville

The Bulls hit the road to take on the 9th ranked Louisville Cardinals in a huge double header that could determine the fate of the regular season Big East title.

USF didn't have it in the first game, dropping the contest 1 to 4 despite the multiple hits the Bulls had and all the chances they had.  Sara Nevins was chased early, working 3 innings, allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, and struck out 3 batters.  Sam Greiner came in to work 2 innings, allowing 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 1 batter.  Lindsey Richardson worked 1 inning, allowing 1 hit, and struck out 2.  Kourtney Salvarola went 2 for 3.  Jessica Mouse went 1 for 4 with an RBI, scoring Janine Richardson.  Laura Fountain went 1 for 2 as well.

In game 2, the Bulls had an even worse game, falling in 5 innings 0 to 9 to the Cardinals, dropping to 40-8 (13-3) on the season overall.  Sara Nevins struggled again, working just 3.1 innings, allowing 3 hits, 5 runs, 2 walks, and struck out 4 batters.  Sam Greiner worked 1 innings, allowing 2 hits, 3 runs, and walked 2.  Lindsey Richardson allowed a hit and struck out 1.  Kourtney Salvarola went 2 for 2.  Ashli Goff went 1 for 2 in a very quiet evening for the Bulls.

Dropping both games hurts and makes the regular season title up for grabs.  The Bulls will have the weekend off before returning to action next Wednesday at 5PM back on campus.

Sophomore Guard Blake Nash to Transfer

Sophomore guard Blake Nash announced today (via Twitter) that he was transferring from USF (confirmed by Greg Auman).

USF Softball Takes on Louisville for a Key Two-Game Double Header

It is big time Big East show down.  The USF Bulls are 40-6 (13-1) on the year and are coming off of a series win over UCONN over the weekend.  The Bulls sit in first place in the conference, but now must face the 12th ranked Louisville Cardinals that sit right behind in in second place in the conference.  The Cardinals are 38-2 (9-2) on the year and have major power in their batting order.  This could a league defining series for both sides.  First game is slated to start at 4:30PM, the second game starts at 6:30PM.

USF Baseball Hangs on to Beat Bethune Cookman

The Bulls continued their long road trip as they headed to Daytona for a quick game against Bethune Cookman before returning to Big East play and they got a huge win in the process.  USF won 4 to 3 on the strength of 10 hits by the offense and a strong outing by Matt Reed as they run their record to 26-12 (10-2) on the year, breaking last years entire win total.

Matt Reed worked 6 innings, allowing 7 hits, 2 runs, walking 3 and struck out 2 batters.  Austin Adams worked 1.1 innings, allowing 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 1 batter.  Nick Gonzalez worked 1.1 innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 2 batters to end the game.

Chad Taylor went 2 for 4.  James Ramsay went 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs on the night.  Kyle Teaf went 1 for 2 with a walk.  Todd Brazeal went 2 for 3 as well as the Bulls did just enough to get the job done to even the series on the season at 2-2.

The Bulls will take on Louisville this weekend for a huge 3-game series that could determine the Big East regular season title.  The first game is Friday at 7PM.

USF Baseball Heads to Daytona to Take on Bethune Cookman

After taking two out of three games against Pitt over the weekend, the Bulls remain on the road as they take on Bethune Cookman for a one game match-up, taking a break from Big East play.  USF is 25-12 (10-2) on the season, but lost 2 out of 3 against Bethune Cookman back in Tampa earlier this season.  BCC is 23-14 (12-3 in the MEAC) this season and is an impressive 16-5 on the year at home, so the Bulls will be facing a real tough challenge in this one (game slated to start at 6PM).

Defensive Tackle Cory Grissom Out with Ankle Injury

After reserve defensive end Anthony Hill went down on Saturday with a torn ACL, the Bulls defensive line took another hit today with defensive tackle Cory Grissom going down with a fibula fracture to his right ankle (per Greg Auman).

Pork Chop, the 6-2 321-pound defensive tackle, was at practice this morning during non-contact drills (helmets and shorts) when he went down with the injury and was carted off the field.  He is scheduled for surgery on Thursday and there is no timetable for his return.

Last season, Grissom totaled 38 tackles, including 6 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.  He was the most experienced defensive tackle returning for the Bulls and was poised for a huge season.

This is really bad news for the Bulls.  The team is already thin at the tackle position with inexperienced players battling for playing time.  Grissom was to be a key factor this season and now he has this injury that could take some time to recover from.  Young players like Todd Chandler, Elkino Watson, Luke Sager, and Clavion Nelson, will have to step up their performances going forward to help fill the void while Grissom is out.  We wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

Recapping a Busy Weekend for USF Athletics

The weekend is over (sadly) and it was a busy one for USF athletics as several teams were in action.

The football team took the field in their second scrimmage of the season, first at Corbett in front of the fans.  The Bulls looked solid on offense, all three quarterbacks had their highlights as well as the receivers like Andre Davis and running back Lindsey Lamar.  The defense had a few solid moments, but has some work to do after allowing some deep passes and committing a large number of penalties.  USF will play its last scrimmage of the season on Saturday night under the lights of Raymond James Stadium.  It's free for everyone so prepare your tailgate and enjoy a great night of USF football.

The USF Bulls were able to match the Pitt Panthers run for run in an offensive show down as they win 9 to 8 and improve their record to 25-12 (10-2) on the season, taking the series over Pitt.

Bats Roar to Life as USF Beats UCONN to Take Series

The Bulls had their 19-game winning streak snapped last night against UCONN and the ladies responded today by racking 10 hits and 11 runs to win the game 11 to 3 and take the series.  The Bulls were beat 3 to 7 yesterday, but the offense lifted them big today as they improve to 40-7 (13-1) on the year.

Offense Shines in First Spring Scrimmage

The offense shined in the second scrimmage of the spring (Picture: www.gousfbulls.com)
The Bulls took the field last night in a key scrimmage game on campus in front of the home crowd at Corbett Stadium as the team continues to work hard in preparation for the highly anticipated 2012 season (stats and notes from Greg Auman).

USF Softball Splits Double Header

The 18th ranked Bulls hit the road for a 3-game road trip at UCONN starting with a key double header today as they tried to continue their impressive 18-game winning streak.

USF Baseball Gets Big Win Against Pitt

After dropping the first game of the series yesterday to Pitt, the Bulls rallied from a 1st inning deficit to beat the Panthers 6 to 5, improving their record to 24-12 (9-2) on the year.

Joey Lovecchio worked 6 innings, allowing 8 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks, and struck out 3 batters.  Lovecchio struggled in the first inning but after that he was able to regroup and get out trouble and get a productive start.  Nick Gonzalez worked 2.1 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 1 batter.  Steven Leasure worked two thirds of an inning as well.

Could USF Land DE Transfer from Notre Dame?

News broke yesterday that a star defensive end, Aaron Lynch of Notre Dame, would be transferring back to his home state of Florida and USF could be a possible landing spot for the highly talented pass rusher.

Josh Newberg of Bulls 247 broke the story first ($) that Lynch would be transferring out of Notre Dame after completing his spring semester at Notre Dame.

USF Softball Hits the Road for a 3-Game Set Again UCONN

The Bulls, 38-5 (11-0) on the year, hit the road for a key 3-game series against the UCONN Huskies.  The Bulls, after sweeping Providence on Wednesday, set a program record with their 18th win in a row.  They will look to notch a few more wins on the road and keep the streak going, but the lady Huskies are a solid team with a powerful lineup.  They are 17-15 (6-3) on the year and are a perfect 7-0 at home, so something has to give as the Bulls come to town.

From Last Night: Baseball Drops Game to Pitt

Last night, the Bulls dropped a key game to Pitt on the road, 1 to 2, dropping their record to 23-12 (8-2) on the season and taking them out of their tie for 1st place (at the moment).

Andrew Barbosa worked 6 innings, allowing just 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and struck out 7 batters.  Adrian Puig worked 1.1 innings, allowing a walk and struck out a batter.  Kyle Parker got the last two outs of the game.

The offense was held in check by the Panthers that were just 2-7 in league play entering the series.  James Ramsay went 1 for 4.  Todd Brazeal went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and Buddy Putnam went 1 for 4 in a quiet night at the plate for the Bulls.

USF will look to rebound today with a 3PM game time.  They wrap up the series tomorrow at 1PM.

Friday, April 13, 2012

USF Heads to Pitt for a 3-Game Set

The USF Bulls, 23-11 (8-1), return to conference action as they hit the road again to take on the Pitt Panthers.  Pitt is 16-15 on the season, but just 2-7 in league play so far.  They are 6-3 at home, so they will look to turn their season around as the Bulls look to continue to stay at the top of the Big East standings (game tonight starts at 6PM, followed by a 3PM start time on Saturday, and finally the series ends Sunday at 1PM).

Who to Watch During the Spring Game

The Bulls are playing the first of their two spring games this Saturday at 6:30PM at Corbett Stadium, located on campus.  The Bulls will be suiting up as they prepare for the 2012 season and will continue to work to make their cases for starting jobs and back-up positions.  As we watch from the stands, there are a few players that you should be watching that are battling for key positions  Here are 5 players we will be watching the most during the game.

USF Offense Has to Get Lindsey Lamar More Involved in 2012

The Bulls went 5-7 last season and in several games, the offense seemed to hit a brick wall, unable to move the ball when they need it the most.  The team is looking for a spark this spring and senior running back Lindsey Lamar, when used correctly, could be the big play maker this season if the Bulls are able to feed him the ball.

USF Sweeps Double Header Against Providence

The Bulls returned to action after sweeping SJU over the weekend.  They welcome Big East foe Providence into town for a quick double header as they looked to continue their 16-game winning streak and improve on their 36-5 (9-0) record.

In the first game, Sara Nevins was in boss mode again as the Bulls won 5 to 0.  She worked 6 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 12 batters.  Lindsey Richardson, pitching for the first time since March 9 (against Va Tech) due to shoulder stiffness, worked the 7th inning, allowing one walk and struck out 2 batters. Kenshyra Jackson went 1 for 2 and scored 2 runs as the Bulls managed just 2 hits in the game.  Janine Richardson went 0 for 2 and drove in a run.  Jessica Mouse went 1 for 2.  The Bulls managed to score 3 runs in the 6th without a hit (strange but true).

The team continued to roll in game two, winning 5 to 0 again.  Sam Greiner pitched the entire game, allowing just 4 hits and struck out 4 batters as she improved her record to 9-3.  Gina Kafalas went 2 for 3. Kenshyra Jackson went 2 for 3 with an RBI.  Janine Richardson went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored 2 runs and Kourtney Salvarola went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The Bulls have now set a program record with their 18th win in a row and are now 38-5 (11-0) on the year.  They are playing some of their best ball right now as they continue to battle and get closer to the NCAA tournament goals.

The Bulls will play 3-game series on the road starting Saturday at UCONN.  They open up with a double header, the first game starting noon and the second game at 2PM, before wrapping up the series on Sunday with an 11AM first pitch.

USF Softball Takes on Providence

The USF Bulls, 36-5 (9-0), is in the midst of a 16-game winning streak as they look to continue their impressive play as the Friars come to town for a two-game double header today.  The Friars are 13-21 (4-4) on the season, coming off of a loss to Pitt.  The Friars are a solid team that has some power in their lineup that can challenge the USF pitching staff.  Let's take a closer look at the Friar lineup (the first game is at 1PM and the second game is at 3PM).

Skip Holtz's Name Added to the Arkansas Coaching Search Rumors

Last night, Arkansas dismissed their football coach Bobby Petrino after his motorcycle incident and other activities while in Fayetteville.  This leaves the Razorbacks looking for a new coach and a name that appeared quickly on the rumor mill was Coach Skip Holtz (Bruce Feldman among others mentioned his name would be on the short list of candidates for the position).

USF Falls to Stetson

The Bulls had a lead late, but the bullpen couldn't hold it as the Hatters rallied to beat USF 6 to 4, dropping the Bulls to 23-11 (8-1) on the year, taking both games this season (Bulls have struggled against in-state foes).

Matt Reed got the start, working 6 innings, allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, and walked one batter.  Steven Leasure worked two thirds of an inning, allowing 2 hits.  Nick Gonzalez went two thirds of an inning, allowing 2 hit, 1 run, and struck out one batter.  Ray Delphey followed him, but allowed the Hatters to come back and take the lead for good.  He worked two thirds of an inning, allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, walking 1 and struck out 1 batter.

Kyle Teaf batted lead off (Mendez had the night off) and went 1 for 5 with an RBI.  Chad Taylor went 1 for 4 with an RBI.  Jimmy Falla went 2 for 4.  James Ramsay went 2 for 4 with an RBI as he continues to swing well.

The Bulls will get back to Big East play as they hit the road again to take on Pitt for a 3-game series starting on Friday night at 6PM.

Bulls Release First Depth Chart of the Spring

As the Bulls prepare for their first Spring game of the season on Saturday evening on campus, Coach Holtz and staff released the first depth chart of the season.  Keep in mind this is the first depth chart of the spring.  After the games and practices, the order will change and it could look completely different come fall, but for the fan, it is the first real taste of football.

USF Baseball Takes on Stetson Again

The USF Bulls take a break from Big East play as they hit the road to take on in-state foe Stetson for the second time this season.  The Bulls, 23-10 (8-1) on the year, lost the first game against the Hatters in Tampa 2 to 6.  They will look to pay them back, but the Hatters are a tough foe.  They are 21-10 on the year and play well at home.  Let's see how they will fair in this game (game starts at 6:30PM).

USF Baseball and Softball Complete Series sweeps

What a great weekend for USF baseball and softball.  Both teams have been on winning streaks recently and it continued today as both teams completed sweeps in their respective games.

Softball runs its winning streak to 16 now with a 6 to 0 win over SJU, completing a strong series for the Bulls.  Sara Nevins was in boss mode again, working all 7 innings, allowing just 2 hits and struck out 12 batters.  She is now 22-2 on the year, that is not a typo.  Gina Kafalas went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs.  Kenshyra Jackson went 1 for 2 with an RBI, Laura Fountain went 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Alexis Nowell went 2 for 2 with an RBI as well.  The Bulls will take the field again on Wednesday afternoon for another double header against Providence as they look to continue their winning streak.

Not to be outmatched, the baseball team beat Cincinnati 8 to 5, completing their sweep and running their record to a mark of 23-10 (8-1), keeping pace for the Big East regular season title.

Derrick Stultz went 6 innings, allowing 8 hits, 3 runs, and struck out 3 as he runs his record to 5-1.  Kyle Parker worked 2.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs.  Steven Leasure got the last two outs of the game.

The offense got the long ball going in this one.  Daniel Rockhold went 2 for 4 with his 5th home run of the year, bringing in 4 RBIs on the day.  Andrew Longley went 1 for 4, hitting his 3rd home run of the year and drove in 2 runs.  Zac Gilcrease went 1 for 4 and scored a run as well.

The Bulls will hit the road again on Tuesday as they take on Stetson in Deland at 6:30 for a non-conference matchup.

USF Softball and Baseball Looking for Sweeps Today

USF softball and baseball will both be looking for sweeps in their respective series today, both games starting at 1PM.

The softball team, in the midst of a 15-game winning streak, will take on SJU today, looking to improve on their 35-5 (8-0) record.  It is military appreciation day at the park.  The Bulls will be wearing camo jerseys, military personnel will get two free tickets with ID (remember kids are always free).  After the game, their will be an Easter egg hunt for the children and they will be able to run the bases as well.  Rocky will be there and fans can get autographs from the ladies after the game.  Get to the park and make some noise for the ladies!

The baseball team, 22-10 (7-1), needed a few extra innings last night to get the win over Cincinnati as they look to keep pace in the Big East race for 1st place.  They will try to complete the sweep and keep the impressive start to the season going (team went 25-29 last season, so doing better already).

It should be a fun and exciting day for both teams.  Stay tuned for full game wrap-ups later this afternoon.

The USF Bulls needed 12 innings, but they got the big win over Cincinnati 3 to 2, improving their record to 22-10 (7-1) on the year as they continue to play well in conference play.

Joey Lovecchio got the start for the Bulls.  He worked 8 impressive innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and struck out 8 batters.  Ray Delphey took over for him, working 1.2 innings, allowing 1 hit and struck out 2 batters.  Nick Gonzalez (got the win to improve to 3-1) worked 1.2 innings, walking one batter.  Steven Leasure got the last two outs of the game.

James Ramsey went 2 for 5 in the game.  Zac Gilcrease went 1 for 2 with the game winning RBI in the 12th inning.  Andrew Longley went 1 for 4 with an RBI as well.

This was a strong performance by the Bulls as they look to keep pace in the Big East.  The Bulls will try to sweep the Bearcats tomorrow as they take the field at 1PM.

USF Sweeps Double Header Against SJU

The USF Bulls returned home for a 3-game series against St. John's University as they continue conference play.  The two teams squared off in a key double header as USF looked to continue its impressive record.

The Bulls took game one 5 to 2.  Sara Nevins worked 6.1 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and struck out 11.  She was pulled in the 7th after giving up back-to-back hits, replaced by Sam Greiner.  Greiner got two outs, but gave up two hits (which led to the runs).  Nevins returned to strike out the last batter to end the game.

Gina Kafalas went 1 for 4 with a run scored.  Laura Fountain went 2 for 3. Stephanie Medina went 3 for 3 with an RBI.  Kourtney Salvarola went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Jessica Mouse went 1 for 3 with an RBI as well to secure the win for USF.

The Bulls continued to roll in game two, winning 9 to 1 in the second game of the double header.  Sam Greiner worked 4 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run, and struck out 1.  Sara Nevins worked the last 2 innings, striking out 5 batters.

The offense heated up again.  Sydney Dinelli went 1 for 1 with 2 RBIs in a pinch hitting at-bat.  Janine Richardson went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs.  Jessica Mouse went 2 for 3 with a home run and drove in two runs as the Bulls improved their record to 35-5 (8-0) on the year.

An important note is the status of SJU outfielder Summer Comstock who appeared to severely injure her leg in the 6th inning in a collision with a teammate going for a fly ball.  Her leg was mobilized by paramedics and was taken off the field at the end of the game.  We wish her the best.

The Bulls will look to complete the sweep tomorrow when they take the field at 1PM.

Sun Dome is More Than a Stadium

A few weeks ago, USF brought the media into the Sun Dome to show to the Tampa community the massive renovations that are taking place inside the 30-year old stadium.

For those who got to sit inside the old Sun Dome, these renovations mean more than just changing the paint on the outside.  It is bringing in a new era for athletics and putting the university and the programs on the map, a far cry from where they use to be.

USF Softball Takes on St. John's for a Key Three-Game Series

The USF Bulls, 33-5 (6-0), are back home as they host St. John's University for another key series in Big East play.

SJU is 14-22 on the season, 2-3 in conference play.  The Red Storm are also 2-5 away from New York, meaning homefield will play a key role for the Bulls as they look to notch a few more conference wins as they continue their impressive season.

The offense heated up for the Bulls as they hit the road to take on Cincinnati tonight.  USF won 8 to 2 in the first game of the 3-game series, improving their record to 21-10 (6-1) on the year as they continue to play well in conference play.

The Bulls got it going on offense.  Alex Mendez went 2 for 5 with 4 RBIs, including a huge double in the 9th inning that cleared the bases and sealed the game for good.  James Ramsay went 2 for 4 and Jimmy Falla went 3 for 5.  Andrew Longley went 1 for 4 with an RBI, Kyle Teaf went 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Luis Llerena went 2 for 4 and scored 2 runs.

USF is 6-1 in the conference, but still has a lot of work to do.  They will take on the Bearcats again tomorrow at 6:30 as they look to go up 2 to 0 in the series and extend their great start in conference play.

USF Baseball Hits the Road for Three Games Against Cincinnati

USF baseball, 20-10 (5-1), are hitting the road for the first time in 22-games as they head to Cincinnati to get back to the Big East portion of their schedule (3-game series).

The Bearcats, fresh off of their 11 to 2 win over Ohio, are just 11-16 on the season, including 1-5 in conference play.  They are 8-7 at home however, posing a real challenge to the Bulls who were no-hit against Stetson last time out until the 6th inning. The team will have to shake off that performance and battle as they look to stay in the Big East title hunt (games are scheduled for 6:30PM today, 6:30PM tomorrow, and will wrap up on Saturday at 1PM).

2011-2012 USF MBB Season Review

The 2011-2012 season has ended for the USF Bulls, but it was a record breaking season that won't be forgotten anytime soon.

The Bulls finished the season with a record of 22-14, 12-6 in Big East play, and made it to the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament, the first tournament appearance in 20 years and the first two wins in the tournament in program history. USF won historic games this season, sweeping Villanova and Pitt, beating Seton Hall, Cincinnati, and Louisville as they made their way to the dance.

The Bulls won a lot of games, more than most fans were expecting after the 10-23 campaign from the 2010-2011 season.  However, the wins didn't come with big time offense, they did it on defense.  USF had the best defense in Big East history, allowing just 56.9 points a game, a Big East record.

Reviewing the 2011-2012 USF WBB Roster

The USF ladies finished the year at 19-16 (8-8) on the year, ending the year in the 3rd round of the WNIT tournament.  It was the 8th time in the last 9 years the Bulls have made it to a postseason tournament.  WHile the overall record was great, it was the individual effort from each player that made it happen this season.  Let's take a look at the personal accomplishments of each player.

Bulls Drop Game to Stetson

The Bulls dropped their game to Stetson 2 to 6 as they fall to 20-10 (5-1) on the year. The Bulls didn't get their first hit until the 6th inning and scored both runs in the 9th inning as they struggled to get anything done most of the night on the base pads.

USF Baseball Takes on Stetson

Todd Brazeal and company look to notch another win before hitting the road over the weekend.
The USF Bulls, 20-9 (5-1), are coming off of a strong weekend, taking two of three against Notre Dame.  They will now take a break from conference action as Stetson comes to town.  The Hatters are 18-9 (3-3) on the year, including 4-5 on the road.  The Bulls will be looking to close out their home stand with a strong win, but the Hatters will pose a real challenge.

2011-2012 WBB Basketball Season Review

The 2011-2012 season has come to an end for the USF women's basketball season and what a season it was. The ladies rebounded from a disappointing 2010-2011 season where they went 12-19 and 3-13 in league play. USF finished the regular season with a record of 19-16 (8-8), finishing 9th in conference play and winning one game in the conference tournament.  They also made it to the sweet 16 of the of the WNIT tournament, the 8th postseason bid in the past 9 seasons, showing the program is bouncing back after one bad year.
