The Bulls, falling 17 to 30, were able to hang tough with the 4th ranked Seminoles, but a loss is a loss.  USF is now 2-3 (0-1) on the year after this loss.  The team was able to lay it all out there, but now they will have to look back, build off of this effort, and get ready for Temple on Saturday.

Instant Reaction: South Florida Falls to Florida State

The Bulls fell 17 to 30 to FSU, dropping USF to 2-3 on the season.  While many thought the Bulls would be run out of the stadium, the defense muscled up to make stops, got pressure on Manuel and the the Nole offense, and did a few plays on offense to hang around in this one.  There were mistakes, penalties, and just blown assignments that allowed the 4th ranked team in the nation to get the win.  FSU was the better team out there, their depth and talent was clear, but USF hung tough.  They battled hard and left it all out there, but two huge mistakes late sealed their fate.

USF Men's Soccer Ties Villanova

After getting the lead in the first half, Nova struck in the second half and both teams battled to a tie, sending the 13th ranked Bulls to 6-2-2 (1-0-1) on the season.

Brenton Griffiths got the lone goal for the Bulls set up by an assist from Sebastien Thuriere.  Eric Osswald made 9 saves on the day as both sides exchanged blows back and forth, but after all the shots taken, it was a tie.

USF will next face Cincinnati on the road on Wednesday night at 7PM as they look to notch a very important road game.

Game Day: FSU

Here we go folks, the biggest game of the season and one of the biggest in program history for USF.  We have talked all week about this team and the debacle at Ball State, but now it's time to focus.  The game is sold out, ESPN is here, and the 4th ranked Noles are here, so it's going to be a big game.  Yes, USF beat them in 2009, but that feels like 30-years ago and times have changed.  FSU is the power team, has depth on all sides of the ball and USF is facing "down the barrel of a shotgun" of this one.  This game is gut check time for USF, either they can be blown out or there is always the chance of the major upset.  Let's see what happens in this one.

Know thy Enemy: FSU

This is one of the biggest games of the season for the Bulls and with a home crowd and a national audience tuning, there are a lot of factors that could spell victory or defeat in this game. FSU vs. USF, let's see how they can try to win this game and how they can lose this one.

Key Match-ups to Watch for USF vs. FSU

The individual match-ups will be huge across the board in this game for both the Noles and our Bulls.  Let’s take a look at some of the biggest ones that could determine the outcome of this game.

Pulse of the Fans: Why are USF Fans so Angry with Football this Season?

You mad bro?
As the Bulls prepare to face the highest ranked opponent to ever step on the field of Raymond James Stadium, the fans are growing impatient and frustrated not only with the team, but the program in general.  While 2-2 is not the end of the world, the way the team and coaching staff have gotten there, is not sitting well with some.

Scouting FSU: Offense

The FSU offense is very talented and is loaded at all the positions.  It will be interesting to see how the Bulls defense that has not been able to get any pressure, to get anything done against them.

Scouting FSU: Defense

The FSU defense is one of the best units in the country and the Bulls offense and skill players will have their hands full in this one. While Coach Fitch says the offense has faced great defenses in the past, I don't think the team has ever faced one with the level of skill and depth this unit has.  Let's see what Daniels and company will be facing in this one.

USF Men's Soccer Dominates in Win Over FGCU

The USF men's soccer team got the offense cranked up early as they cruised to 3 to 0 big win over FGCU in front of the home crowd at Corbett.  USF is now 6-2-1 (1-0-0) on the season.

Leston Paul got the scoring started in the 19th minute on an assist from Wesley Charpie and Ricardo Webb. The Bulls struck again in the 35th minute when Kevin Olali got the goal through on an assist from Ben Sweat and Brenton Griffiths as the Bulls dictated the pace and controlled the ball the entire game.  While the defense was solid again for USF, it was great to see the offense pick up the pace and score early and often.  USF has struggled at times despite getting great looks from the talented front line and finally they were able to put it through and get a big win and get the offense flowing.

After this win, the Bulls will head to Villanova on Saturday to take on the Wildcasts in another important Big East game which begins at 1PM.

USF Men's Soccer Takes on FGCU

The Bulls, after beating Providence, are now 5-2-1 (1-0-0) on the year as they play FGCU for a mid-week non-conference bid before they get back to Big East conference play.  FGCU is 3-3-1 this season, but they are 0-2 away and will be facing the loud crowd at Corbett (game scheduled for 7:30PM).

Scouting FSU: Special Teams

Special teams is so important for any team and for a game against the talent level of FSU, the Bulls will have to play a perfect game on special teams and make all the key plays in order to keep field possession and make smart plays.

Meet the FSU Coaching Staff

The FSU coaching staff leads one of the most talented teams in the country.  Coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff have recruited and have one of the best teams in the nation.  Let's see who they are and what they are putting together on the field.

USF Women's Soccer Beats Seton Hall

After going 3 games without a goal, the Bulls came through in the 65th minute to hang on to beat Seton Hall 1 to 0.  They are now 5-4-1 (1-1-1) on the season after the strong win.

The only goal in the game came in the 65th minute as Taylor Patterson set up Sharla Passariello, notching her 5th goal of the season as the defense held strong.

The Bulls will next face Cincinnati on Friday night as they return to Corbett Stadium and the home crowd.  The game is slated to start at 7:30PM.

The Morning After: Picking Up the Pieces After Losing to Ball State

Where do we start? (picture: www.gousfbulls.com)
Where do we start?  USF is now 2-2 (0-1) after falling yesterday to Ball State, 27 to 31.  The Bulls had issues all over the field, from bad match-ups on defense, penalties that kept drives alive, and the offense again sputtering when they need to do it the most.  Let's try to dig through the rubble to see what happened and where we go next.

USF Women's Soccer Takes on Providence

The USF ladies continue their Big East play on the road as they head to take on Seton Hall (game begins at 1PM).  USF 4-4-1 (0-1-1) lost a heart breaker to Rutgers, going to double overtime in the loss on Friday and they will be trying to shake it off and get a big win in this one.  Seton Hall, 6-5 (1-2), on the year will be a tough challenge.

USF Volleyball Takes on Seton Hall

The USF volleyball teams continues its Big East portion of the schedule as they face off against Seton Hall (game begins at 2PM).  USF, 9-5 (1-0) had a great game against Rutgers the other day, but now must face another monster in Seton Hall that is 12-1 (1-0) on the year, look for a very exciting game here).

USF Men's Soccer Rallies in Overtime to Beat Providence

The USF men's soccer team once again was pushed to overtime, but was able to rally to score late to win their first Big East game of the season, running their record to 5-2-1 (1-0-0).

Both sides battled each other to a draw in regulation time, forcing an overtime.  In the 97th minute, Leston Paul was able to set up Roberto Alterio to win the game as the Bulls won a close game at home in front of the fans as they begin their Big East run.

The Bulls will next face off against FGCU on Tuesday night at 730PM as they look to notch a big signature win before continuing conference play.

Instant Analysis: DERP, USF Falls to Ball State

So...that happened.  The Bulls, who needed to just take care of business after a bad loss to RU, laid an egg to Ball State, yes, Ball State.  The offense was all over the place, penalties hurt the time, defense failed to get off the field, and Daniels threw two interceptions that killed the late.

USF will face FSU next week and let's be real honest, it could get ugly there.  This was a bad loss.  We love USF, but this was bad.  We have a lot to learn, a lot to change, and with the Noles coming, good luck.

Full game recap tomorrow, but for now, pure anger.  This was bad.

USF Volleyball Beats Rutgers to Open Big East Play

Bulls notch their first win in league play, running their win streak to 7 games.
USF volleyball got league play started off on a solid foot as they beat Rutgers in 4 sets, improving to 9-5 (1-0) on the season against a very tough Rutgers team that was undefeated at home this season.

Andrea Rodriguez Gomez had 9 kills and 2 digs.  Kayla Walton had 14 kills.  Valerie El Houssine had 8 kills and 15 digs.  Ciara Brown, continuing to shine in her freshman year had 16 kills and 2 digs.  Claudia Cabrera had 28 digs.  Wylie Devlin had 29 assists and 9 digs.  J'beria Davis had 11 kills and 6 digs to round out a huge game and a huge step for the Bulls as they continue to play well, winning 7 straight now.

The Bulls continue their northeast road trip as they take on Seton Hall tomorrow at 2PM, hoping to get another huge win and continue the strong start in Big East play.

USF Men's Soccer Takes on Providence

The USF men’s soccer team returns home after a rough road trip looking to bounce back as they begin Big East play.  After falling 0 to 5 to Akron, the Bulls are 4-2-1 on the year and want to get the conference portion of the schedule started right as they host Providence.  The Friars are 2-4-1 and will be looking to upset the Bulls at Corbett (game begins at 730PM).

USF Volleyball Takes on Rutgers

The USF volleyball team, riding a 6-game winning streak (8-5 on the year) hit the road for their first Big East game of the season.  They will face a tough Rutgers team that is 14-1 on the year (4-0 at home) as they begin conference play (game begins at 2PM).

Game Day: Ball State

Let's put the Rutgers game behind us and not mention the FSU game next Saturday, it's game day.  Our 2-1 (0-1) Bulls are in Muncie, Indiana today to take on the Ball State Cardinals of the MAC conference.  Ball State is 2-1 after beating Indiana last week, so they got the momentum and will want to upset the Bulls.

Weather won't top 60 today, it will be gusty winds at time, and rain is in the forecast, so it's going to be a slight change for many of players.  USF needs to come out in this game and just handle business.  They have more talent, speed, and depth than Ball State.  As long as they don't beat themselves, they should win this game.

USF Women's Soccer Falls to Rutgers in Double Overtime

The USF ladies battled hard and took RU into double overtime, but the inability to get a goal through came back to bite them as they fell in double overtime, 0 to 1.  USF, now 4-4-1 (0-1-1) on the year will look to figure out the offensive woes that continue to follow the team.

Sharla Passariello was once again the most aggressive striker for USF, taking 3 shots, but it wasn't enough and no shots found their way.  Christiane Endler had a solid game in the net, stopping 4 shots and shutting down a lot of RU attacks, but allowed a goal to Jonelle Filigno in the 108th minute to end the game.

USF will next head to face Seton Hall on Sunday at 1PM.

USF Women's Soccer Takes on Rutgers in Second Big East Game

USF women's soccer, after battling Pitt to a scoreless tie, enters this game with a record of 4-3-1 (0-0-1) as they continue Big East play against Rutgers.  Rutgers, 7-3-0 (0-2-0) on the year is ranked 16th in the nation and has a strong front line that will cause issues for the Bulls (game begins at 7PM).

Why Tomorrow's Game Worries Me

Are you as worried as I am about this game tomorrow?
After the ugly loss last Thursday, a lot of fans are on the ledge already this season, remembering how ugly games were down the stretch last season.  The play on all sides of the ball last Thursday night brought back bad memories, memories that haunt me as the team travels to Muncie, Indiana.

Five Ways USF can Win or Lose this Game to Ball State

It's a road game and facing a MAC team that can put up some points in front of the home crowd, just one of many reasons why USF could lose this game.  However, the Bulls ave a lot of factors that should lead them to another road win.

Key Match-ups for USF vs. Ball State

The Bulls are facing a MAC team on the road and while it may seem the Bulls should be the big time favorite in this game, they have a lot of individual match-ups that will be important to watch.

Scouting Ball State: Defense

The USF offense is looking to get going against the Ball State defense.  The same defense allowed the Bulls to march up and down the field, but they will be ready to defend their home-field this time around.  Let’s see the personnel they run out of their 4-3 base set.

Scouting Ball State: Offense

Coach Cosh and the defense will face another new challenge with Ball State.  Last season, the Bulls were able to corral star quarterback Keith Wenning and shut down the Cardinal running attack.  Let’s see what they will be facing this time around.

USF Notches 8th Win of the Year in 4 Sets Against FGCU

There was plenty of reason to be excited as the Bulls notched their 8th win of the season (Picture: www.gousfbulls.com)
As the Bulls prepare for their first Big East game of the season, the ladies had to face FGCU in a mid-week game.  The ladies battled tough and took the match in 4 sets, running their record to 8-5 on the season with the big win.

Kayla Walton had 8 kills on the night.  Andrea Rodriguez Gomez had 8 kills and 1 dig.  Claudia Cabrera had  18 digs on the evening.  Wylie Devlin had 27 assists.  Valerie El Houssine had 7 kills and 14 digs.  Natalia Soares had 17 assists and 7 digs.  Erin Fair had 11 kills and 11 digs and Ciara Brown had 10 kills as the freshmen class continues to come up big for the Bulls early in the year, gaining a lot of experience before Big East play begins this weekend.  The Bulls face Rutgers this Saturday at 2PM on the road to get the Big East portion of the schedule, stayed tuned.

Where is the Run Game for USF?

The offense looked ugly last game out against Rutgers and part of it was the ineffectiveness for the offense to run the game.  With the backs failing to get going for USF and the offensive line struggling, it has made the offense tough to watch.

USF Volleyball Faces FGCU for a Mid-week Match

The USF Bulls, now 7-5 on the season, play a mid-week game against FGCU on Tuesday night (game begins at 7PM) before they begin Big East play on Saturday.  FGCU is 4-6 on the year and will be looking for a big win on the road.

Scouting Ball State: Special Teams

Facing a team on the road, special teams will be very important.  Field position will be everything in this game.  Let's see what the Bulls are facing against Ball State and their specialists.

Monday, September 17, 2012

Meet the Ball State Coaching Staff

The Bulls are back on the road and will be facing the coaching staff of Ball State that is entering its second season with Head Coach Pete Lembo who is entering his second season at the helm (Holtz in his third with USF, so two young staffs going at it).

Who is Ball State?

Let's try not to lose this game please.
The Bulls, on the road again, as they head to Muncie, Indiana to take on Ball State, a member of the MAC conference and foe they beat last year in Tampa.  Ball State, 2-1 (1-0) on the season so far is fresh off of a road win at Indiana and will be looking for a little revenge after last season in Tampa.  Let's learn a little bit more about this week's foe.

USF Men's Soccer Falls 0 to 5 in Ugly Game

This game was ugly, so let's not talk about it too much.  The men's team fell 0 to 5 to Akron in a match for two ranked teams.  USF was down 0 to 1 in the first half before Akron just took control and dominated the game, scoring 4 more goals in the second half to add insult to injury for Kiefer and crew.

The men will take on Providence on Saturday night at 7:30PM at Corbett as they get started for Big East play and try to put this awful game behind them.

USF Women's Soccer Battles Pitt to a Scoreless Tie

The USF Bulls battled Pitt to a scoreless tie today at Corbett field as the ladies began their Big East portion of the schedule.  USF, 4-3-1 (0-0-1), fired away, dictating the tempo of play, but none of their shots could find the net as both sides went through double overtime without scoring once.

Taylor Patterson had 2 shots on goal, Sharla Passariello had 7 shots, and Olivia Chance had 4 shots, but they could not break through in the first conference game of the season.

The ladies hit the road to face Rutgers on Friday night (game begins at 7PM).

USF Volleyball Sweep FIU, Taking All 3 Games this Weekend

Another day, another strong win for the lady Bulls as they swept FIU in three straight sets (25 to 16, 26 to 24, and 25 to 18) to close out a very strong weekend at home as the Bulls improve to 7-5 on the year.

Andrea Rodriguez had 6 kills and 1 dig in the match.  Wylie Devlin had 16 assists and 8 digs.  Erin Fairs had 7 kills and 7 digs.  Valerie El Houssine had 6 kills and 8 digs.  Ciara Brown had 7 kills and 2 digs to round out a great weekend for the Bulls as they rose above .500 and defended home turf, getting a lot players involved and the momentum going.

The ladies will next face FGCU on Tuesday at 7PM before they begin Big East play next week.

USF Men's Soccer Takes on Akron in a Huge Game

The USF men’s soccer team takes the field in the second game of the University of Akron Tournament.  After allowing Butler to tie a game the Bulls had wrapped up (at least we thought, sending the Bulls to 4-1-1), the Bulls will rake on host Akron (3-1-2), ranked 9th in the nation, in one of the biggest games of the young season (game begins at 7PM).  Akron had a scoreless tie with St. John's on Friday night in their first game of the tournament.

USF Women's Soccer Takes on Pitt to Open Big East Play

The USF women’s soccer team returns home after taking two games last weekend in Charleston to run their overall record to 4-3-0, as they start conference play.  Last year ladies went just 2-6-3 and will be looking to get off to a hot start with Big East foe Pitt coming to town.  Pitt is 5-5-0 (0-1-0) on the season after taking a 1 to 5 loss to Marquette and will be looking to bounce back in this game (game begins at 1PM).

USF Volleyball Wraps up Tournament with FIU

The USF volleyball team wraps up their home tournament as they take on FIU (game begins at 1PM).  After beating Bethune Cookman yesterday in straight sets, the Bulls are looking to close out this home tournament on a high note.  FIU, 3-8 on the season, will try to make a run and knock off USF in this final game of the tournament.

Saturday, September 15, 2012

USF Volleyball Beats Bethune Cookman

The ladies took care of business today as Coach Draper and the volleyball team beat Bethune Cookman in 3 straight sets (25 to 16, 25 to 18, and 25 to 18) to take the match and improve to 6-5 on the year.

The Bulls were led by several players in this game.  Andrea Rodriguez Gomez had 5 kills and 3 digs.  Caitlyn Breen had 6 kills.  Wylie Devlin had 19 assists and 11 digs.  Valerie El Houssine had just 3 kills and 3 digs (quiet night, but didn't need her to take over the game).  J'beria Davis had 8 kills and 4 digs.  Kayla Walton had 7 kills and Natalia Soares had 9 assists and 4 digs on the night.

The Bulls play FIU tomorrow afternoon at 1PM as they look to sweep the tournament.

My Views on B.J. Daniels

As we all wake up after a long night at Raymond James stadium, the loss to Rutgers is still fresh in our minds and the play of senior quarterback B.J. Daniels is the topic of every discussion.  After 3 interceptions, bad decisions, and mis-throws, many are scratching their heads as to why he continues to make some of the bad plays.  Let’s step back and see what is going on out there, from my point of view.

USF Volleyball Takes on Bethune Cookman

Bring the noise!
The USF volleyball team gears up for their second game of the USF Tournament in the Corral.  After beating James Madison last night and improving to 5-5 on the year, the ladies are hoping to keep the momentum going in the second game.  This time they face Bethune-Cookman College who is 0-14 on the year (cannot lose this game).

USF Volleyball Handles JMU, Improves to 5-5

The USF Bulls got the USF tournament started off to a strong start with a 4-set win over James Madison today in the Corral.

Kayla Walton had 11 kills in the match.  Erin Fairs had 15 kills and 10 digs.  Valerie El Houssine had 6 kills and 16 digs.  Andrea Rodriguez Gomez had 8 kills and 3 digs.  Claudia Cabrera had 22 digs and 6 assists on the night and Natalia Soares had 23 assists and 9 digs to round out a great effort by the ladies as they get back to .500 on the year.

The Bulls face Bethune Cookman tomorrow at 7PM in a game that they need to take and help them get going with conference play coming.

USF Men's Soccer Can't Hold Lead, Settle for Tie

The Bulls jumped out to a strong lead in the first half, going ahead 2 to 0 into the break, but the defense failed late allowing Butler to score two late goes (4 minutes apart of each other) and scoreless in both overtimes, putting USF to 4-1-1 on the year.

Leston Paul got the Bulls on the board first in the 32nd minute on an assist from Roberto Alterio.  The Bulls struck again in the 37th minute on a turnover in the Butler box as newcomer Samuel Hosseini got the ball through to give the Bulls the strong lead.  The second half however, it didn't go Coach Kiefer and company's way.  The Butler Bulldogs got a goal in the 78th minute on a rebound shot and then just 4 minutes later, got another goal against Eric Osswald (made just 1 save on the day).

The Bulls, who have been so good late in games, let this one slip away.  They will face Akron on Sunday night (game begins at 7:30PM).  They will need to be at their best and cannot afford late half mistakes and allow a top team like the Zips to take advantage.

USF Hockey Season Opens at Embry-Riddle

Puck drops at  9:00 PM tonight at the Daytona Ice Arena
Well the NHL maybe heading towards an inevitable lockout, which means no Lightning for a while, but rest assure college hockey is alive and well. Your USF Ice Bulls are opening the season tonight with the first of two games against the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles. Last season the Bulls won both meetings with the Eagles in dominating fashion. The puck drops at the Daytona Ice Arena tonight at 9:00 PM. Stay tuned to the game over Twitter and Facebook for scores and updates, good luck to the team and GO BULLS!

USF Men's Soccer Back on the Road to Face Butler in the first round of the University of Akron Tournament

Time to roll (Picture: www.gousfbulls.com)
The USF men’s soccer team, after splitting last weekend’s series in Tampa,  hit the road to Akron, Ohio to take part in the University of Akron Tournament.  Their first opponent is Butler who enters the contest with a  record of 1-1-2 on the season (game begins at 4:30PM).

USF Volleyball Takes on James Madison to Open the USF Tournament

Freshman Wylie Devlin has had a major impact in the center of the offense (Picture: www.gousfbulls.com)
The USF volleyball team, after taking the tournament in Saint Louis (4-5 on the year) returns home to open its own tournament, the USF tournament. The ladies will get started with a match against James Madison, who entered the day at 5-5 (note that JMU played Bethune Cookman in the morning, the stats do not include that game). The game starts at 6PM so it’s time to get loud and cheer the ladies on!

The Thursday Night Complex

We’re changing the tone and pace for this topic. We’re taking the time to acknowledge and honor the USF fans who continue to stick it out behind their team year and year out despite the consistent pattern of inconsistency. Just to give a quick background USFMatt and I entered the University of South Florida as freshmen back in 2005; the very year USF joined the Big East Conference.  Even though I have since graduated I still live in the Tampa Bay area and am still very connected to USF through this site, family who are now students. After last night’s loss it is easy to jump ship, hit the panic button, and write off the team and season as a lost cause it would not be anything new. However, looking back on previous seasons we all know that this loss is a cause for concern as it has been historically the precursor to something disastrous. I’d like to take the time and open up the vault of horrible memories by sharing the history of the disaster known as USF Thursday night games through the experience of a fan and alumni who's been there since it began.

The Morning After: Another Thursday Night Game, Another Loss in Conference Play

13 to 23.  That score will continue to haunt the minds of players and fans this weekend as the Bulls fell to Rutgers on Thursday night on ESPN, dropping to 0-9 all time the big cable station sets up shop in Tampa for USF.  The game was an up and down battle that saw so many things happen, a few good, and a lot bad.  Let's try to dig deeper into each unit and see what happened out there and what it means for the rest of the season.

Instant Reaction: New Season, Same Story

1-7 the last two years in conference play, won't get the job done.
Damn...son of a....just a few words being yelled by fans tonight as the Bulls fall 13 to 23 to Rutgers on Thursday, falling to 0-9 all time when ESPN comes to town.  Call it Rutgers curse, call it the Thursday night curse, but the reality is the team played awful and it has become a disturbing trend for the program and Holtz.  Holtz, now just 1-7 at home in Big East play, saw his team commit a ton of penalties, turn the ball over during keep moments and fail to take advantage when Rutgers handed it to them.  There is so much anger to vent tonight, but for now, I will sleep, collect my angered thoughts and get it all out tomorrow.

Game Day: Rutgers

FIRE UP!!!!
After a short week, the Bulls are back home and taking the field in front of a national audience as they take on Big East foe Rutgers.   USF survived their road trip to Nevada with a 32 to 31 over the Wolf Pack, rallying late to escape with the win.  Now, on short rest, they will have to dig deep to come away with this game.

Rutgers, who beat USF last year up in New Jersey in overtime, has a new head coach, but are 2-0.  The Bulls need to come out fast in this game and attack with all the speed and athletes they have on offense and let the defense swarm and cause pressure on Gary Nova, the Rutgers quarterback.  The game begins at 7:30PM tonight at Raymond James Stadium on ESPN, but don't watch it on TV, get to RJS and make it a living hell for the fighting Snookies.

Scouting RU: Offense

The Bulls defense will be facing a very balanced Rutgers offense that will pound the ball in the run game and will use accurate passing to move the ball and sustain drives.  The defense with Coach Cosh calling the shots will have to be at their best to get the Knights off the field and not allow them to control the clock.
