Way Too Early Look Ahead - Tight End

Andreas Shields could have a big season (Picture: http://www.usfnation.com/)
The way too early look ahead continues as we go through each position on the football team, looking at the depth chart before Spring and get an idea of who could start this year In the last segment, we looked at the offensive linemen, for this segment we will stay on the offensive line and look at the tight end position. Under Holtz, the offensive realized they could actually can throw to the tight end whole on offense. Holtz uses an H-back as well that is a kind of tight end/wide receiver mix and will be a factor on the offensive as well (so players can't switch positions when needed). Let's take a look at the depth and who will be the starter in 2011. [keep reading]

Here are the tight ends that could make an impact this season.

Andreas Shields - 6'4" 241-pounds
Shields is a big, athletic target. He has good hands and runs solid routes, giving the quarterback a big target down the middle of the field. He is not a very fast player, but he is an excellent blocker and should be more involved in the offense now that Gidrey has graduated and has a year under Holtz and a better understanding of the offense. Look for him to have a big season if he stays healthy. He has all of the tools needed to be a top conference performer. Aa the offense continues to grow, Shields should become a reliable target.

Jeff Hawkins - 6'4" 251-pounds
Hawkins is another big tight end that can get up field and gives the quarterback a solid target that can fight for the ball. He, just like Shields, is not very fast, but has a high football IQ and can understand a defense, get open, and make a play. He will be the backup entering the Spring practices, but should be featured in some offensive packages and help in run blocking as well.

There is always a chance these players can switch over to fullback as well, but it will depend on the play calling and what each player does best.

Others: There are others on the depth chart that could step in and help add playmaking ability for the Bulls this season. Tyler Guy, Chase Griffiths, and Jake Carlton will all be in the mix as Holtz will evaluate who are the best players and who should get the most playing time on the line. Victor Marc and Isaac Virgin will feature at the H-back position, but could play at tight end or move to the wide receiver position in certain personnel groupings. The Bulls recruited Ty Turner who will probably redshirt and may eventually be a fullback in the long haul.

The tight end position will be featured more this season, so expect better numbers from this group as the offense continues to get better and should be a point scoring unit.
