Defensive tackle Luke Sager is just one player to watch on Saturday (Picture: www.usfnation.com) |
Finally, the Green and Gold Bowl is here for the USF fans. This Saturday at 5 PM, the Bulls will take to the soccer field on campus (Tampa campus) for the final day of Spring Ball. This is your last chance to see the football team in full action before the regular season starts.
The team has already played one Spring game, where the offense couldn't complete a pass and Coach Holtz was not happy. This is a chance for the team to get a lot of things fixed and a lot of work done before the Spring is over and head into the summer workouts with momentum.
Here are 5 players to watch during the Green and Gold bowl [keep reading]
The young freshman had an incredible Spring game and really wowed a lot of fans and coaches. He was accurate, made great reads, and seemed more poised than a freshman usually is. With Gunsby out for the Spring and Eveld struggling, Floyd has a chance to take over as the backup quarterback if he is able to continue to progress.
I watched Sanchez, the former linebacker, in the first game and came away fairly impressed, but he has a lot of work to do in run blocking and pass blocking. Sanchez got involved a bit in the passing game, giving Daniels another weapon out of the backfield. Look for Sanchez to continue to get more comfortable and involved in the offense.
Jeune, the JUCO transfer, has already earned a reputation as a punishing hitter, both from practice and the shot he got on Eveld in the Spring game. Jeune is part of a solid and talented linebacking group that is going to anchor the defense all season. I want to see how he is able to progress in passing situations and how he is able to cover people in zone coverage, not just coming up to the line to punish someone.
I picked Griffin the last game and continue to watch the sophomore receiver. Griffin looked strong in the Spring game, making nice reads and cuts, but he dropped several passes, either due to rust or lack of concentration. I look for him to be more focused in this game and make more catches, showing everyone why he may be the number one target on the field for this season.
Sager is just one of the defensive line starts that will get a ton of playing time this year, but he has competition behind him with Todd Chandler. Sager looked dominant in the Spring game, causing tons of trouble for Daniels, the running game, and the poor offensive lineman that had to matchup with him on every snap. He needs to have another solid game to help solidify his spot on the starting roster.
It should be a very entertaining game, make sure to pack the soccer stadium and watch the future Big East champs at work.
