Top 5 Players From 2010: Number 2

Here are the number players on our top 5 player count down. Yesterday, Matt selected DeDe Lattimore as the number three player while Mike decided to pick Mistral Raymond. Who is number two?

Matt's #2: WR Dontavia Bogan

Coming in at number two on my list is wide receiver Dontavia Bogan. Bogan had a huge season for the Bulls despite the rough and inconsistent play of the offensive under 1st year coordinator Todd Fitch. With injuries to the receiving corps before the season began, a new offensive coordinator, and inconsistent play at quarterback, Bogan was the best downfield weapon for the Bulls all season long and continually made huge plays when they mattered most. The 6’1” 188-pound senior became the most reliable target on the field for Daniels and Eveld. Bogan finished the season with 47 receptions for 685 yards and 6 touchdowns including a season best 64 yard bomb. He also had 2 carries for 23 yards.

Bogan missed the majority of the Gator game with an ankle injury and was forced to miss the following week, but he still led the team in receptions, yards, and touchdowns, proving his incredible ability to catch and create big plays downfield. The Bulls relied on him more than ever this year due to the injuries at wide receiver and the need for a reliable target.

Bogan has great hands that he uses well to work off of defenders and secure the ball. He has excellent speed and runs solid routes as well. He was the primary return man the season before, but Holtz moved him out of this position due to fears he would be injured and the lack of depth at wide receiver. Bogan was dynamic in the return game and could do the same at the NFL level, both as a returner and reliable receiver. Bogan was not drafted by the NFL, but a team will be incredibly lucky if they are able to sign him to a free agent contract. He is a big time player and will be missed this season in the passing game.

Mike's #2: KR Lindsey Lamar

It's no secret that the offense was dismal this year for the Bulls. That's why I have KR Lindsey Lamar as my second most important player on last year's USF Football team. With up and down play by B.J. Daniels and the rushing attack getting fatigued from ground-and-pounding all season long, USF needed a little spark to come from somewhere special. Luckily, they had one of the fastest football players in the NCAA back to return kicks.

Lamar initially was going to play in a slot receiver position, while Dontavia Bogan took the role at kick returner, but Lamar's size wouldn't really allow him to get into the open field without the fear of getting split in half by a linebacker. Since he wasn't going to be seeing time on the offense, Lamar took the special teams role for the season, where he thrived. After Bogan racked up enough yards to become returner with the most yards in USF history, he went back to concentrating fully on the receiver position, where he was badly needed. Lamar scored USF's lone touchdown in the offensive cesspool that was the USF homecoming game against Syracuse on a 96 yard return. He had another outstanding 100 yard return for a touchdown at Louisville to become the first player in USF history with two kickoff return touchdowns. His 26.4 yards per return average was good enough to get him viewed as one of the best returners in the nation.

Next year, you can expect to see much of the same, as our little track star will likely exclusively see playing time on kick returns again. The offense should be considerably better this year, however, so hopefully Lamar won't be the only guy scoring points this year.

So what do you think USF fans? Where should Bogan be placed on the list? Should he be the top player or lower on the list? Lindsey Lamar was majorly important, but do you think he's more important than some of these other guys on the list? Leave your comments below.
