Top 5 Incoming Freshman: Tye Turner

See which freshman comes in at number four on the countdown.
The short top five impact freshman for the 2011 season continues on as we look at the freshman from the 2011 recruiting class that will make to the field this season and help contribute to the team. Defensive back Kenneth Durden was number five, time to see who is number four on the list. [keep reading]
Tight end Tye Turner - 6-3 240-pounds - Griffin, Georgia

I wanted to put linebacker Mike Juene at this spot, but he is simply not a freshman and would be going against the countdown, so surprisingly Tye Turner makes the jump onto the list.

Turner is not the biggest name in the incoming 2011 class, but his position is one of the most important for the Bulls and the current situation will give him a great chance to get playing time right away.

Tight end Jeff Hawkins, a key reserve on the team, recently tore his ACL ligament in non-contact drills during voluntary summer workouts. While not a starter, the Bulls needed him on the roster to provide depth at the tight end position. Now with Hawkins out, it leaves the Bulls with Andreas Shields and Isaac Virgin, not much depth if someone gets hurt.

Tye Turner steps on campus and has an immediate chance this fall to get onto the field with the lack of depth and his playmaking ability. There is some talk that he could even move in to fullback with Chris Breitt and Armando Sanchez splitting time (tight end and fullback move around in Holtz's system, so he would be a factor no matter what spot he lined up at).

Turner has a great opportunity to get onto the field if he is able to make an impression this fall and the Bulls need him to rise to the occasion.

  1. Matt, do you know if Tye Turner has been used more as a receiving TE in his career or a blocking TE?

  2. Primarily as a blocking TE to start the season, but got more into the mix in the passing game. He is up to 16-pounds according to Auman and is a physical beast, so he will be a huge weapon in blocking, but has the size and hands to get down the field and catch passes.

  3. I'd like to see the TE position used more as an offensive weapon this year. TE's are generally under used in most offenses IMO. So much potential for the short routes...

That being said, I don't think Tye makes to much noise this season. Even with limited depth, I think he won't see too much time on the field. Keep him healthy and work him hard, by next year he'll cause a ruckus.
