The Bulls faced an up-tempo team in Notre Dame last week and will be facing the same sort of attack this week with Ball State, which has the coaches a bit on edge.
The coaching staff has been stressing to the players all week about the tempo of the Ball State offense, how they will go no huddle, spread the field, and hustle after each play.
USF did well to make the big plays on defense when they needed to stop ND drives, but gave up over 500 yards of offense in the process, something they will need to correct and not have a letdown in this game (keep hearing about this mental letdown, it is not happening).
The difference for the Ball State offensive attack that will be new for USF will be the play of sophomore Keith Wenning. Like ND and Crist/Rees, he is a big quarterback that can make the throws, but his ability to scramble is something USF did not see with the Irish and will be something to watch for during the game.
Players have mentioned that Wenning reminds them of Eveld, solid arm, big and has the ability to scramble (not a burner like Daniels can be at times). The defense will have to be prepared for him and the spread attack, making sure he doesn't escape and make plays when the defense begins to break down in coverage.
The defense is conditioned for this kind of quarterback though. Practicing with an up-tempo face all through Vero Beach and facing Daniels in scrimmage and dealing with his ability, the team should be ready for this.
As much as they prepare and gear themselves up for this game, it will be something to watch during the course of the action to see if they get to Wenning, cause trouble, and force the big plays or they could be in for a battle with Ball State.
