Big East Week 1 Picks

Hello Bull Rush fans. Last season, Jim (owner and lead writer for HailWV.com) and I had a competition where we picked the winners of each Big East game every week. It was a great way to keep track of how everyone in the conference was doing and also created a friendly competition on who knew more about the teams or who was simply luckier than the other.

This season, we are doing it again and Mike will be joining us as we place our bets and see who knows more about Big East or who has dumb luck. Here are our picks for week 1!

September 1st

Murray State vs. Louisville

Matt: Come on, is this really a game? FCS vs. a solid Cardinal team that has some offensive firepower and Charlie Strong calling the shots? Not even a game. Pick: Louisville
Jim: Louisville. I know nothin' about Murray State, and I'm not even going to both er to research them. Snore.
Mike: Murray State and the Ville have met once before, in 1932, ending in a 105-0 victory for the Racers. Will history repeat itself? In short, hell no.

North Carolina Central vs. Rutgers

Matt: Another game that could go down to the wire. Dodd is a solid QB for the fighting Snookis and Sanu will do everything for them to get just enough points at home. Pick: Rutgers
Jim: Week 1 is known as "Slapdick Week" in College Football. Rutgers here.
Mike: Maybe Rutgers will see former USF basketball player Justin Leemow at NCCU. That would be the most interesting thing to happen in this game.

Wake Forest vs. Syracuse

Matt: The only real game on Thursday night. Syracuse surprised everyone last year and Nassib is the real deal. Injuries have mounted for the Orange, but I think they win this game at home. Pick: Syracuse
Jim: Whoa! ACC vs. Big East in Week 1? Sign me up! Pick: Syracuse.
Mike: Hey, at least someone in the Big East is playing a BCS opponent, right? Go Orange.

September 3

USF vs. Notre Dame

Matt: Pick: USF
Jim: OK, so I see ND is rated 18th... and I firmly believe they're over-rated. Give me USF.
Mike: Not even Touchdown Jesus can save Dayne Crist from the football sins he's about to commit. I'll be here in person, and I plan on seeing a Bulls victory, 34-21.

Buffalo vs. Pitt

Matt: Buffalo is offensively challenged and the new Pitt offense will simply out-pace the Bulls (no relation) and win this game comfortably.
Jim: I would pick Buffalo if they still had Turner Gill running the show. As much as it sickens me to do this, I'm taking Pitt.
Mike: Now, Jim, we don't like Pitt any more than you do. But yeah, we're picking Pitt here.

Austin Peay vs. Cincinnati

Matt: Why do Big East teams scheduled these cupcakes when the real teams like USF schedule real games? Whatever, Cincy wins easily. Pick: Cincy
Jim: Cincy. Not much else to say.
Mike: PPPPPTTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHHHH CINCINATTAAAHHHHHHH

Fordham vs. UCONN (game moved to noon)

Matt: Usually a game vs. FCS opponents is a beat down, but this game could be challenging for the Fuskies, so I am not sure what to think here. I will give it to UCONN due to it's at home, defense is better, and Big East can't lay down. Pick: UCONN
Jim: UConn. Another snore-worthy game. Wake me up for the next one.
Mike: Even UConn might be able to pull out a victory here, but if anyone is capable of losing to an FCS team in week one, it's the Huskies.

September 4

Marshall vs. WVU

Matt: I am sure Jim will have something fun to say about this game. WVU rolls easily. Pick: WVU
Jim: Matt, you're right, I do have something fun to say about this game, so here I go: I'll be drinking $9 beers in the stands, yelling and swearing at every idiot I see wearing Moo-U green, and will probably wind up in jail. If not, it'll be on top of a hooker. New coach Dana Holgorsen's "Air Raid" offense will make Marshall beg off the remaining Coal Bowl series. Defense may look a little rusty since the Eers lost several key starters. Pick: WVU
Mike: The over/under for this game was posted at 53 points. It's very possible that West Virginia covers that all by themselves.

Let's see how smart or lucky our picks are this week. Results will come out on Sunday night.
