What is Wrong with Eveld?

Eveld continues to struggle.
While B.J. Daniels continues to progress in year two under offensive coordinator Todd Fitch, his back-up, Bobby Eveld, continues to struggle with the offense.

Eveld looked solid last year, coming off the bench to rally the team to the big win over Miami and then did a solid job in his only start against UCONN. However this season, in limited playing time, Eveld looks worse than ever while Daniels continues to shine. So what is his problem?

Eveld is just 12 of 23 on the season for 100 yards and 3 ugly interceptions. In his first work of the season, he went just 3 of 11 on 5 offensive series that totaled just 20 yards of total offense against Ball State defense that is not the best in the country. Against FAMU, his interception allowed the Rattlers get into scoring position when USF had complete control in the game.

So what is the deal with him? Are there real reasons that he is struggling or is he just playing terribly?

Eveld didn't get all the snaps in camp, although we were told that the competition was tough with Eveld and Floyd pushing everyone. So, Eveld got the snaps in practice and had a chance to show himself, but didn't look that great in the scrimmages (Floyd was brilliant in those of course).

Even in the Fall camp when Daniels was held out, Eveld had the chance to get a lot of snaps with the first team offense, so the familiarity with the offense and the tempo shouldn't have been a surprise for Eveld, but playing against live opponents, he looks awful.

Now, we could be a little harsh on him right now. He has only played sparingly and has not had a real chance to get a lot of snaps in live action, but the snaps he has had, terrible.

USF needs their reserves to functional and help contribute. We see wide receivers, lineman, and others getting their chance and getting valuable playing time. Yet with Eveld it is just painful to watch him throw out there, he seems lost and cannot make the right throws or time them.

Is he facing tough opponents? Not really, facing the reserves of FAMU should not lead to two interceptions at that point, really no excuse for that. Is the pace of offense too fast for him? Eveld worked with the team all off season just like Daniels and Floyd, so he should be ready for it and should be able to handle it.

Can Eveld turn it around and play better when he does get his chances? We would hope so. Eveld was not bad last season, showing he could make the throws and run the offense, but this season he is making a lot of people upset about his play. The Bulls need him to be better to help add depth behind Daniels so that if (Heaven forbid) anything happened to him, Eveld could take over. Right now, it would be very bad if Eveld had to take over a game. Let's hope he can improve and that doesn't happen.

  1. His first int versus FAMU was because he was hit, the second wasn't thrown perfectly but Davis (or Gonzalez?) went up and batted it away from the defender-great play btw, and it fell into another defender's hands. Fairly unlucky. I don't remember the int versus ball state. He's also playing with the entire second team, so his line is letting guys through and the running backs aren't picking up many yards to free up the passing game. Overall he hasn't looked good, but I wouldn't say terrible. But I agree that it would be a huge drop off for us if Daniels got hurt because Eveld's not even close to where Daniels is right now.
