Darrell Scott Becoming Feature Back?

As the season rolls on, the running game for the Bulls continues to progress. Darrell Scott and Demetris Murray are having solid seasons, but when the season started, both were listed as co-running backs. There was no clear starter for the position. Now as the Bulls prepare for UCONN in two weeks, it would seem that Scott has become the primary running back for the offense.

Scott has 65 carries this season, totaling 426 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns. He also has 5 receptions for 113 yards (long of 84-yards) and a touchdown. He has shown his bruising power, going straight up the middle on runs. He has also shown his speed, breaking runs to the outside and the occasional hurdle over the defender.

Scott continues to get the start in each game, getting the majority of the carries in the first and second series of the game.

Demetris Murray on the other hand, continues to come off the bench and provides a different look in the backfield. Murray is the faster running back and the rushing game adjusts for more zone reads with him in the backfield. He has 52 carries for 266 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season, solid enough, but not the number of carries that Scott is getting.

Now there really is no controversy between who the starter is and players and coaches would tell you they are more worried about winning games, but it would seem, at least on paper, Scott is the primary back. Daniels actually has more carries than Murray as well, so his overall numbers are down.

Murray is doing a great job and continues to show a nice burst when he breaks the ball to the outside. However, for what the offense wants to do during the game, Scott has emerged as the primary running back.
