Notes from Skip Holtz Press Conference 11/28/2011

Sterling Griffin could be available for the game on Thursday night.

Here are some notes from the Skip Holtz press conference today.

Holtz announced a few updates to the battered USF secondary. Both Kayvon Webster (concussion) and Quenton Washington (concussion, shoulder) should be ready to play on Thursday night. Webster missed the Louisville due to the concussion symptoms. The Bulls will need their starters to be at their healthiest for this game, especially with so many reserves were injured.

George Baker, with a rib and neck injury, is very questionable for the game. Sophomore JaQuez Jenkins is also limited with a sore hamstring. Former walk-on Brandon Salinas may play a key role as a reserve on Thursday night.

While the secondary continues to battle injuries, the offense got some good news. Sterling Griffin, who has missed the past few weeks after fracturing his ankle vs. Cincinnati, could possibly play vs. WVU. This would be a huge addition to the passing game if he is able to get on the field. Senior wide receiver A.J. Love (shin) is also healthier and should be able to play in this game as well. Whether Daniels or Eveld get the start, they could have two primary targets back on the field.

Holtz stated he was pleased with the performances of Deonte Welch, Andre Davis, and Ruben Gonzalez, praising their hard work after being thrown onto the field due to the injuries. While they have been playing well, getting Griffin and/or Love back would be huge.

The running game will also get a boost with the return of suspended running back Marcus Shaw who missed the last game. He will be available behind Murray and Scott. Defensive back Spencer Boyd, however, is still suspended (not the best news for the depleted secondary).

B.J. Daniels was back at practice throwing the other night, but still does not have the full velocity back in his arm after bruising his AC joint in the loss to Miami. Holtz stated that Daniels was running around at practice, showing his legs were healthy, but the concern remains with his arm and if he can make the passes and get the ball way. The coaches will continue to evaluate him through the week. I wouldn't expect any kind of full decision until the Bulls take the field on Thursday night.

(Thanks to Adam Adkins for updates during the conference)
