USF MBB Drops Big East Opener in Close Battle with UCONN

If Heath had any hair, he would be pulling it out in this picture.
So close, yet so far. The USF Bulls, 7-7 (0-1), dropped their Big East opener 57 to 60 as the 9th ranked Huskies avoided the upset bid by the Bulls in the conference opener. USF was down by 2 entering the break and were down as many as 8 in the second (led by 8 in the first half) but battled back, coming up just short at the end as they struggled once again to find the basket.

Augustus Gilchrist had 12 points and 5 rebounds on the night but at times was too quiet and settled for too many mid-range shots (I'll give you my personal take on some of the players after sitting courtside, up close and personal with the game). Toarlyn Fitzpatrick had a strong game with 14 points, 12 rebounds (4 of 6 from 3-point range), 2 assists and 3 steals. Anthony Collins had 4 points (just 1 of 7 shooting, entire team shot just 38% from the floor), he also had 4 rebounds, 5 steals and 6 assists. The bigger number is the number of turnovers, 0 (not bad for a freshman making his first start in the Big East vs. the defending champs). Shaun Noriega had 7 points and Hugh Robertson had just 2 points.

Ron Anderson Jr. had 4 points and 4 rebounds. Victor Rudd had 5 points, 3 coming on a last second 3-pointer at the end of the game. Jawanza Poland had 9 points and a rebound. Nash had no points in just 2 minutes of action.

The loss hurts, but as Heath mentioned (from GA) he was impressed with the effort of the team and is hoping they can continue that style of play and they can win Big East games going forward. Fitzpatrick also stated he was not satisfied with just a moral victory, showing the team is hungry for success. They will have their chance as they host Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at noon.
