A Year in Review

2011 was an interesting year for USF athletics. There were some great moments during the season, there were also some bad and strange ones as well. Here is a run down of some of the top moments from the 2011 season as take a look at them.

Greatest team: The men's soccer team had a fantastic year, running down to the elite 8 in the NCAA tournament before they were defeated. Names such as Dom Dwyer and Chris Blais made highlights all season as the soccer team played unreal soccer. With a new stadium, the fan support grew in every game and the future is very bright for Kiefer and crew. As the team looks to build off the great season, recruiting only gets better and the team will only win more in the near future.

Most disappointing team: The football team started off on a high note, upsetting Notre Dame at South Bend. They were 4-0, ranked, and ready to make noise in the Big East, but the team fell apart after the Pitt beatdown and finished the ugly season at 5-7, missing a bowl game for the first time since 2004. While injuries mounted, the way the team lost games was discouraging to fans as the same mistakes continued to happen and little action was taken to correct them. With the conference unstable as it is, the coaching staff making some questionable playcalling, and the recruiting battle always looking uneasy, the future is not certain for the Bulls. They will have to get it together this offseason, find a way to eliminate the mistakes, and get better in ever phase of the game.

Strangest moment of the season: We will have to look back to the start of the season and the softball team. The ladies were taking care of business during the season, but a road game at DePaul brought a strange moment as Eriksen told his team to pack up in the middle of an inning, boarded the bus and left the game. There are questions to why the team did this, it could have been the refs and calls for a timeout for Sara Nevins, it could have been the talking between both sides, no one can say for certain, but it was beyond strange. The ladies had a strong year, but the walk-off was by far the oddest.

What we can look forward to start 2012: 2011 is over, but 2012 is going to be a big year. With the basketball teams battling it out right now, the Big East is going to be a very interesting season for both clubs. Baseball and softball will open the seasons in February as they both want to improve in the Big East (Prado needs to do something if he wants to get the heat off his back). Football recruiting is going to be interesting this season with the recruiting trail heating up and getting intense as USF tries to reload this year with more talent and get better on the field.
