The USF Bulls are traveling to Washington, D.C. in hopes of winning their 7th Big East conference game of the season, but the Hoyas of Georgetown stand in their way. The Bulls are hoping they can relive the magic of the 2009-2010 season when they upset Georgetown, but the Hoyas are ready for them. To get a better idea of what USF will be facing in this game, I asked my friend Stephanie from the Volvo Biggest Fan Challenge for her insight on this game and what USF should expect to see (make sure to check out her site HERE).
1. Jason Clark is G'towns leading scorer. How has he improved last season to this one?
Jason Clark has matured a lot as a player from last season to this season. I think he has more skill in handling the ball, and is definitely a leader for the young team. Clark, like some of the other Georgetown players, seems to be in an ongoing battle for consistency. I think in the next few weeks we will see him really try to hone in on his three point shooting abilities.
2. 2 years ago, USF went on the road and upset Georgetown. How hard is it to win at McDonough Arena and what will this year's Bull team face when they step on the floor?
The team actually plays at the Verizon Center in downtown DC. McDonough is only used for practice and the women's games. That being said, the arena is also home to the Washington Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics- so I think there is definitely something intimidating about visiting teams playing in a professional arena. It can hold just over 20,000 people and a good Georgetown game will definitely fill the seats. It is loud and there is a lot of space to fill. USF is going to face a very energized home crowd. Starting the season unranked, and pushing our way to the top ten earlier this season with a squad almost entirely comprised of underclassmen has every fan excited to cheer for the Hoyas. Regardless of the standings now, Georgetown seems to have maintained a small chip on their shoulder and an underdog mentality; that is something very taxing for a visiting team to unravel.
3. USF has a young freshman guard in Anthony Collins that has been able to lead the offense so far in his first season. How will Georgetown try to slow down a quick guard that can get to the hoop?
Anthony Collins is an impressive freshman, and I think the freshman Hoyas will be able to match him well. This game will be freshman on freshman for a good part of it at least, and you will see a big game from Otto Porter. JT3 is never easy to read but Hoyas seem to be settling into an effective zone defense. I wouldn't be surprised if you see some of that against USF.
4. Augustus Gilchrist had a team high 22 points last season. How will Coach Thompson try to slow him down?
Augustus Gilchrist is having a tremendous season. I think stopping him from making plays is really the key. The Hoyas need to turn the ball over less, improve on free throws, and be there for the offensive rebounds. Defensively, I think Henry Sims will lead this defense to slow Gilchrist down. This should be a great game!
Once again, thanks to Stephanie for taking the time to answer these questions, this should be a great game to watch.
