Coach Heath probably won't sleep much this weekend. |
20-13. That is USF's record this season. 12 conference wins, one win in the Big East tournament. Wins over Cincinnati, Seton Hall, Villanova twice, Pitt twice, all on the record. Big East Coach of the year and trip to the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament for the first time in program history, all on the resume as well. But the question continues to remain, is it enough?
The Bulls, after losing that heartbreaking game to Notre Dame last night will now have to sit, wait, and hope this weekend as the rest of the conference tournaments play out and the selection process takes place.
USF has not been to the NCAA tournament since 1992, 20 years of waiting, and it comes down to a selection show on Sunday to see if all the work they have done this year will be rewarded or will the last few losses send them to the NIT and just shy of the goal.
The Bulls lost their last regular season game to WVU, a game that could have given them 20 wins and maybe a lock for the tournament. They won the first game of the tournament, securing the 20 win plateau and had a strong chance to beat Notre Dame, a game that would have booked their tickets, but down the stretch, bad plays cost them that game and put them on the edge of their seats for the entire weekend.
The team has strong wins, they also have bad losses such as Penn State, ODU, and others, but the conference wins are what matter.
Experts continue to say the Bulls are in the bracket. People who spend all their time like Lunardi all see USF in the tournament, but just because they are predicting and sifting through the numbers, it does not guarantee a lock for the team.
The Bulls can't do anymore, their resume has been submitted. Will they get in? At this point, it's hard to say, they are on the edge. In my eyes, a bit bias of course, they are in, whether as a 12 seed or the play-in games in Dayton, they will find their way into the tournament. Even if they don't and go to the NIT, the team has to be proud of their season, all the success, and the bright future for the program. Hopefully, they can continue to build to the future and dance along the way.
