While the summer is typically a quiet time for USF football (coaches out recruiting, players out of school for the semester), there was a lot to talk about today. Coach Holtz sat down this afternoon for a "hangout"
on Googe+ chat with the fans. Fans could
log-in on the social media site and interact with Holtz, asking him questions
in this very unique and great feature by athletics and football (first coach to
sit down and do a live chat with fans).
Check out the video below for the full chat. Some of the highlights include Holtz joking
he would like to recruit players from overseas, as long as he could head to the
Bahamas first, classic material.
There were a few notes to take from the chat. Holtz confirmed that the team would be
heading back to Vero Beach for the fall.
This makes the 3rd year in a row that the team is leaving Tampa for the
fall camp and setting up base for 11 days in Vero Beach. Holtz likes getting the team away from any
distractions around the campus and team is able to meet closely. The team will return to campus two weeks
before they face Chattanooga on September 1st to open the 2012 season.
Holtz also mentioned during the conference that Notre Dame
transfer Aaron Lynch, who will enroll this summer, is seeking a hardship waiver
to be eligible to play this season (no surprise there). Lynch, the highly touted defensive end,
played one year in South Bend and then decided to move closer to home and
landed with the Bulls. Under NCAA rules,
Lynch would have to sit out one season, leaving him with two years left of eligibility. If he gets the hardship waiver, he could play
this season and would be a huge addition.
The Bulls have had success in the past in having their hardship waivers
approved by the NCAA, so it will be a wait and see game for Lynch.
Another note (from Greg Auman) was the news that offensive
lineman Chandlor Mathews, who enrolled this spring out of junior college, would
be transferring closer to his home in Mississippi. According to GA, Mathews is transferring back
home to be closer to his family and cited family issues in recent weeks that
made decide on this move. Mathew came
into the spring practices and vied for the center position, but was not higher
than third team after the practices. We
wish Chandlor the best of luck with his future.
And news from the men's basketball team as the program
officially welcome FAU forward transfer Kore White to the team. The 6-8 245-pound forward played all last
season at FAU (averaging around 7 points a game) and will have one year with
USF. White will help add depth to the
USF front court with Ron Anderson and Augustus Gilchrist graduating already.
