The MLB draft is over and several current Bulls and future
Bulls heard their names called during the selection process.
In the 4th round, high school signee Walker Lockett was
selected by the San Diego Padres. As
Greg Auman noted, Lockett was not projected to be selected this high in the
draft, but the 6-5 two-way star hammered 18 home runs during this junior
season, drawing the eyes of the pro scouts and it would appear he will be
signing with the Padres (announced on Facebook he was a Padre). This is a big loss for the USF that could
have used him as starting pitcher or as a power bat this season.
In the 8th round, the Angels selected relief pitcher Austin
Adams. Adams, after two shaky seasons
before, became a dominate reliever, holding opponents under .200 batting
average all season and came up big for Prado all season long. While Adams could return for his senior season,
he will probably head to the pros and we congratulate him on the great
accomplishment and everything he did for the Bulls.
In the 11th round, the Braves signed another high school
signee, Levi Borders. Borders, one of
the top hitting prospects signed by Prado, could head to pros or could come to
Tampa and also try to walk-on to the football team as he stated before. It will be interesting to see which path
Borders takes.
In the 14th round, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected senior
pitcher Derrick Stultz after his tremendous season. Stultz was one of the dominate arms for the
Bulls, making his full return after missing nearly two full seasons due to his
shoulder injury. Stultz could return for
his 6th seasons (medical redshirted) but since he already has his degree, he
will most likely take the great opportunity and head to the next level.
In the 36th round, the Diamondbacks continued to take USF
starting pitching as they selected Andrew Barbosa. BoBo, after returning this season from Tommy
John surgery, struck out everyone he faced this season in the Big East, showing
the skill set of the 6-8 left hander.
Barbosa, who has been drafted before, will get a chance to move quickly
through the Dbacks minor league system due to his ability and hopefully
continue to strike everyone out.
Finally, in the 40th round, Jimmy Herget, another high
school signee, was selected by the Braves.
Herget, who had a 1.69 ERA last season and a .383 batting average. Since he is being selected this low in the
draft process, it is most likely that Herget comes to campus, but it is never
set in stone and we will have to wait and see where he ends up.
