2011 stats: Thompson is returning after sitting out the entire 2011 season with back issues (was limited in the spring as well as he continues to recover). Thompson appeared in 2 games for the Bulls in 2010 and redshirted his 2009 season.
Position on the depth chart: Grissom did not appear on the two-deep depth chart coming out of the spring, but there is more to the story. With Cory Grissom out for 3 months, the Bulls will need veteran leadership and depth to emerge on the defensive line. Thompson has been in the system long enough to know the playbook and now that he is healthy, should be able to work his way into the defensive line rotation.
2012 season projection: If Thompson is healthy and can prove himself in practice, look for him to get back on the field and help provide depth to a thin defensive tackle position. The Bulls will need an experienced tackle on the line to help provide depth.
