Meet the 2012 USF Volleyball Team

The season is closing in quick, so let's meet the 2012 volleyball team as they prepare for the new era under new HC Courtney Draper and get ready to make some noise in the Big East.

Casey Albano - 5-5 - Sophomore - Defensive specialist - Orlando, FL (Lake Mary HS)

Albano played a lot in her first season as a Bull.  She appeared in 73 sets for the Bulls, totaling 13 service aces and 83 digs among her total sets, making a lot of key plays in the backfield and in serving the ball as well.  While she is still young for the Bulls, she is a key player for the team and with her early experience, she can make an immediate impact in 2012.

Kayla Bivins - 5-11 - Freshman - Middle Blocker - Gainesville, FL (Gainesville HS)

Bivins, the sister of cornerback Chris Bivins Jr., joins the Bulls for her freshmen season after an impressive prep career.  She ended her 4-year career with 839 kills and 429 blocks, playing on her track team and even on the basketball team, showing her raw athletic ability.  She was named FHSAA player of the year and was also the Gainesville player of the year in her senior season, showing her how high her talents are.  She will play in 2012, being rotated in, and will make an impact for the Bulls.

Caitlyn Breen - 6-2 - Senior - Middle Blocker - Saint Cloud, FL (Harmony HS)

Breen appeared in 53 sets last season.  She totaled 47 kills, 9 digs, and 52 blocks as a reserve.  She will continue to be a solid player that can rotate in and contribute on the front line with her great height and striking ability.

Ciara Brown - 6-0 - Freshman - Right side hitter/Outside hitter - Aurora, CO (Overland HS)

Brown is another freshman for the Bulls that should make an impact in her first season.  While in high school, she was a 4-year starter and played for the Colorado Juniors Club, gaining a lot of experience during that time.  Look for her to be a key reserve to rotate in for the Bulls.

Claudia Cabrera - 5-6 - Senior - Defensive Specialist - Naples, FL (Golden Gate HS) (Hillsborough Community College)

Cabrera played in 100 sets last season, serving as a front line specialist for the Bulls.  She totaled 1 kill, 19 assists, 20 service aces and 212 digs, locking down the middle of the court.  She is another experienced player that will help Coach Draper in her first season with a young team both in the service game and also controlling the center of the court.

Jessica Burghart - 5-9 - Senior - Setter- Middleburg, FL (Middleburg HS)

Burghart only appeared in 33 sets last season as a reserve.  She totaled 11 kills and 168 sets (also added 5 service aces, 33 digs, and 11 blocks) during that time behind Shelbie Dailey.  With Dailey gone, look for Burghart to compete for the starting setter role and to play a bigger role this season as the team looks to rebuild with the strong freshmen class.

J'beria Davis - 5-11 - Senior - Outside hitter - Clearwater, FL (Clearwater HS) (Hillsborough Community College)

Another HCC transfer, Davis returns for her senior season as one of the top strikers in the Big East.  Last season she totaled 243 kills in 100 sets played.  She added 4 service aces, 112 digs, and 56 blocks, moving all over the court and adding her skill set to all phases of the game.  With her athletic ability, look for her to total even bigger numbers this season.

El Houssine played 104 sets during her freshman campaign and re-wrote the record books.  She totaled 380 kills (led the team) with 46 service aces, 220 digs, and 45 blocks on the year being named 2nd team All Big East as a freshman.  El Houssine is the power house of the team and as she continues to get better and learn more, she will only get better.  She will be the center of the team this year and will continue to rack up the numbers.

Erin Fairs - 5-11 - Freshman - Middle blocker/Outside hitter - Richmond, TX (Foster HS)

Another talented freshman for the Bulls that can play on the outside or at the line for the Bulls.  She was a 4-year starter in high school and was named 1st team all district in 2010.  She is very versatile player, so look for her to be a key addition on the rotation this year.

Another freshman, Harrison was a 4-year started in high school, totaling 13.4 kills, 3 digs, and 2 blocks per set, showing her incredible skill set and ability to make a play anywhere on the court.  Look for her to make an instant impact this season and should see continued playing time as her skill set matures.

Jennifer Lauber - 6-1 - Freshman - Middle blocker/Outside hitter - Augsburg, German (Munich International School)

Another freshman, but she is from a little bit further out than Tampa.  Lauber played softball and basketball during her prep career and was named a team captain in 2009, showing her athletic ability and her leadership on the court.

Chynna Ratner - 5-6 - Freshman - Defensive specialist - Bradenton, FL (Bradenton Christian School)

The youth movement for the Bulls continues.  Ratner was a 3-year starter and totaled 834 kills and 5-2 digs during her prep career.  She is a defensive ace, but can attack the net, making her a skilled player that should have plenty of playing time this season.

Andrea played in 101 sets last season, totaling 142 kills, 19 service aces, 68 digs, and 137 blocks, moving all over the court.  Coach Draper will rely on her along with the strong senior class to lead the young team behind them on the court and Andrea should have a break out season.

Natalie Soares - 5-7 - Freshman - Setter - Porto Alegre, Brazil (Colegio Farroupilha)

Soares is a highly experienced player that joins the Bulls.  She played for SOGIPA volleyball club and was named best player of her team 3-times during her prep career.  She comes into a need position for the Bulls at setter and will be the key reserve behind Burghart this season and the future at the position.

Erin Taylor - 5-11 - Freshman - Right side/Outside hitter - Dallas, TX (William P. Clements HS)

The youth movement continues with Taylor.  She was a 3-year starter for her high school team and was named team MVP both in 2011 and in 2012, showing her skill set and how respected she was by her teammates during her prep career.  Look for her to make a strong showing this season.
