Instant Reaction: South Florida Falls to Florida State

The Bulls fell 17 to 30 to FSU, dropping USF to 2-3 on the season.  While many thought the Bulls would be run out of the stadium, the defense muscled up to make stops, got pressure on Manuel and the the Nole offense, and did a few plays on offense to hang around in this one.  There were mistakes, penalties, and just blown assignments that allowed the 4th ranked team in the nation to get the win.  FSU was the better team out there, their depth and talent was clear, but USF hung tough.  They battled hard and left it all out there, but two huge mistakes late sealed their fate.

In the third quarter, Daniels was hit hard and it forced Matt Floyd to come in for one snap.  The coaching staff had him take the snap, drop back for a pass, and he was hit hard and fumbled.  This allowed FSU to scoop up the ball and score a TD.  Why on earth was he passing there?  Yes, Daniels was hurt and it was smart to pull him off the field, but Floyd, a freshman and cold, was called to pass the ball.  Why not have him run it, call a run?  No, the coaching staff had him throw and the fumble turned the tides for good.

The other dumb play was late in the 4th, USF had the ball and was driving.  The team had run the ball twice even though time was slipping away.  The Bulls had it on 4th down and Daniels threw a pass out of bounds because he was rushed.  At that stage of the game, he has to throw it down the field, at least to do something, not just lobbing it away and thinking he has another chance.

USF showed more fight than ever in this game, but it was another loss and big mistakes on both sides of the ball ended an chances USF had to get closer in the game.  USF next hits the road to face Temple, another game that could trap the Bulls.
