Key Match-ups to Watch for USF vs. FSU

The individual match-ups will be huge across the board in this game for both the Noles and our Bulls.  Let’s take a look at some of the biggest ones that could determine the outcome of this game.

B.J. Daniels vs. Defensive end Bjoern Werner – The Bulls go as Daniels goes and facing an aggressive pass rusher with speed like Werner has, it will be interesting to see how Daniels is able to hang in the pocket and when forced to run, how quickly he can get to the edge. Werner is a fast defensive end that has a relentless motor and will be after Daniels the entire game.
Andre Davis vs. Cornerback Xavier Rhodes – Davis has asserted himself as the go-to receiver on the offense and he will be matched up with Rhodes, the best coverage corner for the Noles.  Rhodes, who takes even more leadership in the secondary after Greg Reid was dismissed from the program, is a solid player that can cover the field, both in zone and in one-on-one match-ups down the sideline.  Davis, a great route runner, will have to be perfect in and out of his breaks and will have to make sure he secures the catch and not allow Rhodes to get in and knock the passes away.
USF Front 7 vs. FSU Offensive Line – We are going into the trenches and one of the biggest battles will be with the USF defensive line and how much pressure they can get on Manuel.  The FSU front line that was very young last season, has gotten better in each game and continues to mature.   It will be key for the Bulls front line and linebackers to plug up the running lanes and get pressure on Manuel so he is off in his timing and cannot pick apart the secondary.
USF Offensive Line vs. FSU Front 7 – Like FSU’s front line, the Bulls line, that has been questionable all season, will be facing arguably the best front 7 all season in the Noles defense.  FSU is loaded with talent and pass rushers and with a weak offensive line and trouble running the ball, B.J. Daniels could be running for his life in this game. The line has to open up the running lanes and allow Daniels to stay on his feet and find his receivers deep down the field.  If Daniels is pressured each snap, it could be an ugly game.
Ryne Giddins vs. Quarterback E.J. Manuel  - We are staying up front and looking at the Bulls best pass rusher, Giddins, and his battle with Manuel.  E.J. Manuel is 6’6” and over 230-pounds, proving to be a huge target to track down.  Manuel has the arm and feet to get out of the pocket and move around.  Giddins will have to get off the line and track him down, making sure he can’t run down the field and throw his timing off in the passing game.  If Giddins can’t get to Manuel and allows him all day to find his targets, this game will be bad.
