Head Coach
Kyle Flood – Not a typo there, Greg Schiano is no longer patrolling the
sidelines for RU, he is now calling the shots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
after leaving in the offseason. The new
man, the 29th
HC in RU history, is Kyle Flood. Flood is entering his first year as a head
coach after serving as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach for RU
since 2005. Prior to joining the RU
staff, Flood was the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Delaware
and was the offensive line coach at Hofstra as well from 1997-2001. Flood has been part of 6 bowl appearances
with RU, so he knows the program well and is one of the most respected coaches
on the staff. He is a solid tactician,
eliminating mistakes, paying attention to detail, and is a great recruiter,
bringing talented players to him and rallies everyone to his side. With his background as an offensive line
coach, we can expect this RU team to be very disciplined and strong at the point
of attack, meaning the battle on the lines and in the trenches will be the
difference in winning and losing this game.
While it is just his third game as the HC, he will be prepared for this
Big East opener.
Offensive
coordinator Dave Brock – Coach Brock is entering his first full season as the
offensive coordinator for RU after spending the last 2 years as the interim
offensive coordinator and tight ends coach at Boston College. Prior to that, Brock spent time at Kansas
State (might know Coach Cosh), North Carolina, and Temple. Brock was also part of the coaching staff at
Hofstra with coach Flood, giving them a lot of familiarity with each other. Brock has a lot of experience with wide
receivers and tight ends, so we can expect the RU receivers to run great routes
and know the offense well, making it easier for Gary Nova (RU QB) to find his
targets. Look for the RU offense to be
balanced like they always have been, pounding away with the run game, but
introducing some vertical passing and taking their shots when they can.
Defensive
coordinator Robb Smith – Coach Smith is also entering his first full season as
the defensive coordinator for RU after spending time as the special teams coach
and secondary coach from 2009 to 2011.
Prior to his time at RU, Coach Smith was the secondary coach at Maine
from 2002 through 2008. Smith is a sound
coach, preaching fundamentals, and will have a balanced defense, not taking too
many risks in blitzes. Look for the
secondary to be especially tough with his background with them.
