Break Out Season Ahead?

Could Andreas Shields have a break out season in 2011 (Picture credits go to www.gousfbulls.com)

USF changed its offense in 2010 and looks to continue that change and progression into 2011. One position in particular that was rediscovered was the tight end position. For years, USF never seemed to throw to the tight ends, using them just to pass block and spring Grothe free for big runs. But offensive coordinator Todd Fitch wants to use them more in the passing game and he has a good one that could have a break out season for the Bulls, Andreas Shields.[keep reading]

Shields, the 6'4" 241-pound, soon to be junior tight end could be a huge weapon in the passing game next season. He finished 2010 with only 5 receptions for 74 yards, but showed flashes of talent in the game against Rutgers and spent time behind Kevin Gidrey learning more about the new offense.

Shields is a big frame target. He has solid hands and uses his size well to position himself for the ball, giving the quarterback a huge target down the middle of the field. He runs routes well and has enough speed to get away from a tackler for big gains. He is solid at run blocking and should be an every down type player as the Bulls are thin at this position and have unproven talent behind him (Virgin and Marc could also fill in at tight end as they continue to change positions).

2011 could be a big season for Shields. He has all of the skills needed to be a top tight end in the conference and a year learning the new offense and a solid team returning means Shields could have a huge season for the Bulls as they look to improve on the 2010 campaign.
