Webster Locking It Down

Kayvon Webster has emerged as a lock down corner back for the Bulls. (Picture credits go to www.gousfbulls.com)
The USF defense became the strength of the team this year as the offense struggled. The defense under first year defensive coordinator Mark Snyder, became one of the best in the Big East. The defensive front dominated, but it was also the secondary that rose to the occasion and shut down the passing attacks in the conference. Kayvon Webster was a key part of the secondary as he emerged as one of the best lock down corners in the conference.[keep reading]

Webster, the 5'11" 187-pound sophomore out of Monsignor Pace High School has emerged as one of the best defensive players for the Bulls. With 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash and a 33" vertical, Webster is one of the most athletic playmakers for the Bulls. He has great down field speed, able to cover any wide receiver. He also physical enough to play at the line of scrimmage and get pressure on the opposing quarterback.

In 2009, Webster emerged on the scene, playing in all 13 games, starting 6 of them. He totaled 30 tackles (17 solo), including 2.5 tackles for a loss. He had 2 pass break ups and 1 interception for 34 yards. He proved to be very versatile, flying all over the field and making key plays for the USF defense.

This season, Webster had slightly lower numbers than many expected. He totaled 28 tackles, including 1 for loss. The number that stands out is the lack of passes defended and interceptions. This is partially to his role in the defense, coming up to the line to help in the run game (Big East is loaded with running backs) and also teams simply not wanting to throw his way.

Looking ahead to 2011 as the Bulls begin year two under Skip Holtz and Mark Snyder, Webster is poised for a huge season. The Bulls lose Mistral Raymond from the secondary and will need a big time play maker to step up in the secondary and lead the team, this is where Webster will shine. He has an unbelievable skill set and has shown early in his career he is capable of great things on the field. Next season expect Webster to become an even greater lock down corner as the Bulls continue on their quest for the Big East title.

  1. One of the best lockdown corners in the conference? He barely started for USF, had no interceptions this year. Who said he's one of the best lockdown corners in the conference?

  2. Webster is emerging as a lock down corner. He has improved the last two seasons and has all of athletic ability in the world. Understand that he was in a new defensive scheme under 1st year defensive coordinator Mark Snyder who likes to play more zone and blitz packages, taking Webster and moving him around, Webster was a safety in high school. The kid has tons of potential and is working hard, watch out for him next season.

  3. You can't be serious? Kayvon webster lockdown corner? This article is bull the kid has proven nothing can lock down any receiver? Come on I can't remember exactly wat game that was in 2010 he got took up top in the back of the endzone and got scored on kayvon webster is not a lockdown corner.. Prove me wrong 2years 1interception? Lockdown corner? I think not put up articles that's fact on people who is actually doing somethin at usf

  4. People simply want to focus on the interception numbers. Try to understand the new defensive system he is under with Snyder and his natural position of safety coming out of high school. Webster has all of the physical tools to become a lock down and notice the story describes him as "emerging" as a lock down corner? Every corner will get burned at some point, it just happens, even Revis in the NFL gets burned once in awhile.

  5. You keep saying he has all these skills when will they be shown? Action speak louder than words so until then I'm sticking with what I have seen so far out of webster

  6. Just watch him this season, a year in the Snyder system, he will put up some big numbers. A player with his size, 4.4 speed, 33" vertical, he has the physical tools, once he gets a better understanding of the schemes Snyder likes to call, the numbers will come.

  7. Oh and webster didn't get burned he jus got scored on he was step to step with the receiver it was more like a Moss give me that you to small

  8. I agree webster is not a lockdown corner he does have speed I can't really speak much on this guy of what he has done because he hasn't done anything... The kid was definitely good in highschool but hasn't done the same at the college level a lot of athletes are good in highschool then get to the college level and its like well what happened? He still has two years to prove hiomself we shall see

  9. Corners will get beaten, when it is one on one situations, it will happen, no matter who they line up against.

  10. He's not even the best returning corner at USF - Quenton Washington played much better. The notion that he didn't get picks because opposing teams were throwing away from Webster is badly off the mark.

  11. You keep saying this 4.4 speed he was put at kick return a few times and couldn't even get 5 yards everytime it was kicked to him speed only matters when you show it if you don't no one cares if you have it...

  12. Very true, his big time numbers aren't there yet, but with two years left, he will produce. He is getting better at playing receivers and is adjusting to the college pace. He has the speed and with Snyder leading the way, expect him to have a breakout season this year.

  13. Wats your problem with Webster he is a good kid and your just having fun bashing him...something like a hater I believe just watch him this year. I agree that he's not lockdown but you have to understand he is new to the position and learning also the coaches like him just give him time...Go Bulls

  16. Quentin Washington has more experience then Webster ..you have to understand that Webster came in and didn't red-shirt he's only a 19year old sophomore...Quentin started for them Webster only started three games year because he was behind 16 Raymond the games he started he did exceptional well ....Syracuse Louisville and CLemson...as far as kick return he only totaled two the rest were kicked away from him and 5 yards? Ur not giving this kid no credit

  33. A lot of people try to be a coach, but have no idea how hard it actually is to play the game. They sit on the couch, watch the game, and act like they know it all, but the fact is, Webster is doing great, if he wasn't, he wouldn't be out there. The kid is becoming a great player, these "fans" need to really watch the games and support the players (except Alvarado).
