The 2010-2011 basketball season was a rough one for the USF fans. A 10-23 record and a 3-15 put the Bulls in the cellar of the conference after making a statement in conference play just a year ago (thank Dominique Jones for that). The Bulls, without Jones, struggled at both ends of the floor and often fell apart late in games. The defense was solid this year and the team battled in every game, but the lack of overall scoring hurt the Bulls.
The Bulls used nearly every player on the bench in an attempt to find offense and defense during the course of the season.
In this series, I will be analyzing each player, looking at their offense, defense, and what to expect from that player down the road in their USF careers. Some of the assessments will be rough, but after a rough season, it's time to be honest and get a real look at what they Bulls will be bringing to the court next year.
In this assessment I will take a look at guard LaVonte Dority.[keep reading]
LaVone Dority, the 6'1" 195-pound guard out of Chicago, Illinois played in his first season with USF. Dority played as a reserve for all of the season, playing in just 26 games and a total of 5.7 minutes per game.
On offense, Dority hardly got involved due to the lack of playing time and the offense that Heath wanted him to run. Dority averaged only .7 points per game, .3 rebounds per game, and .4 assists per game. He only came off the bench in late game situations to either give Crater a rest or to get a few minutes of playing time if a game was out of hand (Notre Dame game). He is not a big 3-point threat, but has a decent mid-range game and good enough skill to get to the hoop.
On defense, once again, he was the victim of no playing time. In his limited playing time, he played well. Dority has above average speed and is able to stay in front of his man. He has quick hands and can cause issues (it also helps him get off of screen easier than usual).
His potential: Crater is going to be a senior next season and as of now, Coach Heath has not recruited another point guard. This means that Dority will have to step up his game. He hardly played this season, but will have to work extremely hard this off season to get ready for next year. Heath will need more scoring off the bench and a player to help give Crater a break. Dority has the potential if he works hard and prepares next year.
Overall grade: C-
