Demetris Murray is poised for a big year rushing the ball (Picture:www.usfnation.com) |
The offense finally came to life on Saturday during the Green and Gold game. Daniels seemed much more comfortable in the passing game, despite the inconsistent play of the wide receivers (dropping too many passes). The offensive line played well (Eveld was grateful for that), but the running game was the biggest surprise as Murray and Scott simply took over and showed the packed house what kind of rushing attack the Bulls will have this year. Demetris Murray, the most experienced running back for USF, had a solid day, rushing for 75 yards and 1 touchdown. Murray flashed great lateral movement and toughness rushing the ball, taking shots from the defense, but always moving forward. Murray gave credit to the offensive line for opening up the running lanes, but his ability to continue to move his legs forward and fight for yards makes him an ideal running back.
Heading into the season, I look for Murray to get a majority of the carries, at least to start the game and season. Murray is a solid runner, has above average speed, and is also a threat in the passing game.
Darrell Scott, after missing most of the last scrimmage with a muscle strain, looked dominant as well, gaining 61 yards rushing and 1 touchdown. Scott is much more physical than Murray is, running hard up the middle. He does not have the same speed Murray has, but can get to the outside.
Murray and Scott appear to be the two top running backs heading into the Summer and Fall. Aycock is another physical running back and has a bit more speed than Scott, but seems to have fallen a step behind Murray and Scott in the depth chart. He will get carries this season, but is still to be determined how big of a factor and impact he will be this season.
The Bulls will also get a some speed options as well. Marcus Shaw, out after thumb surgery, could be a nice change of pace running back that gives Fitch plenty of speed in the backfield and can create new formations and weapons, including option runs.
USF should have a much more balanced offensive attack and it will start with the running attack.
