The Bulls took to the field on a rare on-campus scrimmage on Saturday to end the Spring practices with the Green and Gold game. Fans that packed the soccer stadium got to see a lot of offense in the game, more than the first scrimmage at Raymond James Stadium. The fans also got to see one of USF's best defensive stars make an impact and a glimpse of the big year ahead. [keep reading]
Junior Kayvon Webster made a huge play in the scrimmage game, snagging an interception from freshman Matt Floyd. Floyd emerged in the first scrimmage, making tons of plays, reading routes, and making his progressions, something rare to see from a freshman quarterback. But on this day, he wouldn't be so lucky.
Webster, the lockdown corner (I labeled him in a previous blog and will stand by that), read Floyd's eyes on this pass and was able to make an incredible break on the ball and take the interception back 70-yards for a touchdown, teaching the freshman signal caller he still has a lot to learn.
Webster, along with the talented corners Quenton Washington, Tyson Butler, Ricardo Dixon, and George Baker, have all had a strong Spring and will help lock down the passing game this year. There is a slight concern on depth entering the season. But with walk-on Ernie Tabuteau and incoming freshman Kenneth Durden, the Bulls have experience and talent at corner.
Webster's big play yesterday is just a taste of what to expect this season. As long as everyone stays healthy, the secondary, from Webster to Young, should make the defense the strongest unit on the team and could help win a few more games for Coach Holtz this season.
I've never worried about the USF defense, we've always kept the points down when it really mattered. (e.g. The UF game was already out of hand) Our lack of offense is our only real limit to our success.
ReplyDeleteDefense is always good, but depth is the concern early this season. The offense should be much better, more talent and speed this year, but we need wide receivers to catch the ball, 2 running backs that sat out a season to get going, and Daniels to not make mistakes.
