From Adam Adkins (via twitter) and Coach Skip Holtz - The news just continues for USF as the Bulls have announced a new transfer to the football roster, tight end Michael McFarland.
The 6-5 245-pound tight end out of Blake High School in Tampa, Florida was a 3-star recruit when he enrolled at UF (according to Rivals, a 4-star recruit according to Scout.com), but is now transferring back home to the Bulls.
McFarland will seek a hardship waiver from the NCAA citing family illness as his reason to transfer closer to home (per Greg Auman). It has not been determined if the NCAA will grant a hardship waiver, but he will be able to practice with the team starting today and fills a huge need for the Bulls. McFarland redshirted his first season at UF, so if he sits this season, he would still have 3-years of eligibility left with the Bulls (per GA).
The Bulls are thin at tight end. With Jeff Hawkins out for the season with a torn ACL, Andreas Shields and Isaac Virgin are the only Bulls at the tight end position with any experience. Incoming freshman Tye Turner could get a look at the position as well, but a player with the size of McFarland would be a huge pick-up for the roster if he is able to play. If not, the Bulls would have to wait until next season for him to be eligible.
Welcome to the family McFarland! Once more information becomes available, we will have it here!
