Which players could make a move on the first Fall depth chart for the Bulls? (Picture: www.usfnation.com) |
Here we go, football finally returns for the USF Bulls as they hit the practice field Thursday afternoon after Holtz returns from the Big East media day today (8/2). They will practice Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. After the Saturday practice, they will pack up the team and head to Vero Beach to begin the Fall camp away from the campus for the 2nd straight year (12 day camp).
Coach Holtz has stated that the revised Fall camp roster will be released tomorrow and should give us our first chance to see who has worked hard through the summer, made strides since Spring, and who could possibly be stepping up this Fall for Holtz and staff. Here are a few positions to pay attention to tomorrow when the roster comes out (note that we will bring you the updated roster as soon as it becomes available and give some insights on anyone moving around on the roster). Coming out of the Spring, the wide receiver corps had a different look to it. 6th year A.J. Love, who missed 2010 with a torn ACL, was not on the roster as he was held out of most of the Spring practices. Look for him to be added and it should be interesting to see what he can do on the field. Terrence Mitchell, the converted defensive back, beat out Sterling Griffin, who is coming back off of an ankle injury that forced him to miss the entire 2010 season. Will Griffin step up his game and retake his spot and how good will Love be this season? Will Deonte Welch continue to impress and move his way up or will incoming freshman Andre Davis make a statement early?
Cornerback
Quenton Washington and Kayvon Webster are the starting corners, there is not much question about this right now. The real question remains is who is going to step up their play and come help them add depth and step up to provide more play making ability in the secondary? Is Ricardo Dixon healthy enough to play, is George Baker and Tyson Butler ready to play right away? Where is Spencer Boyd and who on earth is the highly regarded walk-on Ernie Tabuteau that continues to get a lot of talk from the coaches? Depth is a big concern for Holtz and Snyder, so even incoming freshman Kenneth Durden could make a statement early with the chances he has before him.
Tight End
With Kevin Gidrey making strides with the Redskins and Chase Griffiths transferring out and Jeff Hawkins out with a torn ACL, the Bulls are already hurting at tight end and entering this Fall, questions have to be raised. Will Andreas Shields or Isaac Virgin step up and make a name for themselves? Will Tye Turner, the one player that can play the position for Holtz be able to step in right away with the chance he has and get onto the field? This is going to be the one position to watch very closely coming off of this new roster as they head into the Fall camp.
So USF Nation, what are we expecting on the new Fall roster? Who is going to make a move on the depth chart? Are we expecting some surprises or are we going to see the same players at the same spots that came out of the Spring? Should be a fun day to see what happens.
Jeff Hawkins has the torn ACL. Chase Griffiths has transferred out Matt
