The USF defense continues to lead the way for Holtz and staff. After getting 5 turnovers against a powerful Irish offense, USF has simply locked down Ball State and FAMU, allowing under 200 yards to the Rattlers and coming up with huge momentum changing turnovers to get the ball back to the offense.
One of the strongest areas of the defense is the secondary, the No Fly Zone, as they have been named so accordingly this season. So far, they are living up to that title.
The secondary continues to lead the way with senior Jerrell Young. Young has 8 tackles so far this season, including one huge interception and the forced fumble that changed the course of the Notre Dame game. Since being named a team captain, Young has led the secondary as they shut down passing attacks. Jon Lejiste has 10 tackles on the season including a forced fumble and an interception as well. Coaches have been pleased with both safeties, but know there is a lot more they can do out there.
Cornerback Kayvon Webster has become the top tackler out of the entire secondary, leading everyone with 11 tackles, including one tackle for a loss, one pass break up and of course the huge fumble recovery for 96-yards that had every screaming and cheering vs. ND. Senior Quenton Washington has 10 tackles and has not been playing as well recently, struggling with a nagging knee injury and other players pushing for playing time (according to his coaches). Yet despite the struggles and the possibility of losing his job, Washington will find a way to rise up and continue to lead from the corner position.
The reserves for the Bulls could be starters for any team and continue to get plenty of action and keep producing. Safety Mark Joyce has 3 tackles and a forced fumble this season, impressing the coaches with his play from the safety position.
Spencer Boyd is starting to get more playing time, making an impact on special teams. Ernie Tabuteau has played well, nearly getting a few interceptions in the last two weeks. JaQuez Jenkins, despite the hamstring injury (will return this week) is continuing to get better at corner. Finally George Baker has played a lot while Washington gets snaps off, keeping the side of the field locked down.
The secondary continues to be a driving force for the Bulls defense and overall success of the team. As they head into their final non-conference game before the start of the Big East schedule, the defense will continue to shine and continue to institute the No Fly Zone.
