Bulls Running Game Faces Tough Test

The Bulls will be facing a tough test on Saturday afternoon when they take on UCONN. The Huskies rank 6th in the country in run defense, allowing just 74 yards a game on the ground.

The Bulls, led Darrell Scott and B.J. Daniels, have been running the ball well, averaging 223.2 yards per game on the ground, so something has to give here.

The front 4 of the Huskies defense is strong, getting sacks from all the lineman and getting big plays from the linebackers as they load the box to stop the run. The USF offensive line has done a solid job thus far getting gaps open for Scott and allowing Daniels to run the zone scheme, but this is a big test for them.

It is not certain if USF can simply line up with the Huskies and pound Scott up the middle for yardage, but they don't have to. Demetris Murray and Marcus Shaw (where has he been?) are the speed options in the backfield that allow the Bulls to stretch the field and get the ball to the outside where their speed can be best used.

The Bulls have the speed at the skill positions so there is no need to challenge the Huskies up the middle in this game. The offense needs to get more screen passes going, mis-direction, and let the speed of Murray, Shaw, and even Lamar get the players to the outside and create on the perimeter.

The real weakness that USF will attack is the secondary of the Huskies. With Blidi Wreh-Wilson now out for the game, the secondary will be targeted by Daniels constantly, but the running game will be key in this matchup and USF will have to find a way to get the ground attack going.
