What Returns for USF in 2012: Defensive Line

The Bulls were one of the best in the country at tackles for loss and sacking the quarterback, thanks in large part to the defensive line. USF found pass rushers from the edge and run stoppers in the middle of the line. Let's take a look at what will be returning for USF in 2012.

Sophomore Ryne Giddins (6-3 261-pounds) returns for the Bulls and brings experience and skill at the edge. Sophomore Julius Forte (6-2 264-pounds) returns as well after playing a key reserve role behind Giddins during the season. Forte will have to step up to help replace Claude Davis who graduated. At the other defensive end spot, USF returns junior Anthony Hill (6-4 282-pounds) who will have to step up his game to replace Patrick Hampton and provide more pass rush off the edge.

At defensive tackle, junior Cory Grissom (6-2 321-pounds) returns for USF, giving the Bulls a big time force and veteran in the middle. Freshman Elkino Watson (6-2 288-pounds) returns after a stand out freshman season for the Bulls. Sophomore Luke Sager (6-3 277-pounds) also returns but will have to step up his game to replace senior Keith McCaskill, but look for Watson to battle him for the starting job at tackle.

Also returning is freshman Clavion Nelson (6-3 253-pounds), freshman Marquis White (6-4 299-pounds), and freshman Cody Sanfratello (6-0 245-pounds). Freshman Todd Chandler (6-0 297-pounds) also returns after missing the entire season due to academic issues. If he has resolved those issues, he will be a key member to the depth chart this season. Sophomore Demi Thompson (6-1 276-pounds) also returns for USF, after missing most of 2011 with back issues.

USF has skilled players on the line for 2012, but not a lot of depth. The recruiting class will help, but USF can't afford too many injuries on the line due to lack of experience on the line.
