Chris Cosh Named New Defensive Coordinator

A week since Mark Snyder packed his bags for College Station, Coach Holtz finally found his new defensive coordinator. Chris Cosh, the defensive coordinator of Kansas State has accepted the job with USF and will take over the reigns as signing day approaches. Kansas State tried hard to keep Gosh in Manhattan, but he decided to take his talents to Tampa instead.

Chris Cosh has been the defensive coordinator/assistant coach as Kansas State for the past 3 seasons (2009 till now) under legendary coach Bill Snyder. Before his time in Manhattan, he was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for Maryland (2006 to 2008).

Prior to his time with K-State and Maryland, he was the linebackers coach at South Carolina from 1998 to 2002 under Lou Holtz and across the ball from Skip. He was the defensive coordinator before being fired by Lou.

Cosh has been credited with turning the Kansas State defense around, a unit that ranked 39th last year in rush defense (3rd in the Big 12). Before this season, Cosh saw his defense give up over 200 yards a game on the ground a season ago, so he has shown the ability to right the ship. His defense allowed 398.8 yards a game (this season), ranking 5th in the Big 12 and allowed 27.8 points per game. They allowed 30 or more points in 5 games, but also won close games such as their 36 to 35 win over Baylor and Robert Griffin III. While the rush defense improved, his pass defense gave up more than 260 yards a game.

To his credit, Cosh faced some of the best offenses in the country in Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, both putting 50 points or more on his unit, but skewing the numbers a bit. The unit was solid overall, grabbing close wins in late game situations, something Snyder's unit failed to do on several occasions.

Cosh's defensive unit runs out of the traditional 4-3 base, the same as Snyder's base defense, but Cosh has been known to run a 5-2 scheme at times and brings different packages to the table, something that could be interesting to watch once the camps begin and the season draws closer (how will the defense respond to the new schemes).

So the search is over. According to Auman, Cosh was the only person interviewed by Holtz during the search, showing his faith in Cosh and determination to get him to Tampa.

One potential issue for Cosh is his lack of familiarity with Florida and the impact on recruiting. With the competition for recruits always heating up in Florida, having a person that is familiar with the area or at least has established themselves in the area for recruiting is key for any program, Cosh has no real connections to Florida, but while some will be quick to point that out, the same can be said for Mark Snyder and others as well.
