From Brett McMurphy (CBS) - According to sources, Memphis and the Big East are in the final stages of negotiations that would make them an all-sports member starting in 2013. Memphis would be the 3rd Conference USA member, joining SMU, Houston, and UCF, to join the Big East. Big East is also adding Boise State and San Diego State as football-only in 2013 and Navy in 2015.
Memphis would be a solid addition for the basketball side of the conference, after they lose Pitt, Cuse, and WVU, they will need a strong program to help fill the void. But when it comes to football, Memphis has won 5 games in the past 3-seasons, so it leaves a lot to be desired.
While this adds a new team to the conference (if and when it may go final) the Big East still is facing a major issue for the upcoming 2012 season. WVU and the Big East are in the midst of a big legal battle that could see the Mountaineers leave the conference for the Big 12 starting this year. That would leave the remaining teams looking for new opponents.
This is a very interesting and still developing story. Once more comes forward or if the rumor itself is squashed by Memphis or someone else, we will have you covered.
At this rate, "Meatball" Marianato and C-USA's Britton Banowsky should just make the unholy union of the two conferences into one "super conference" official.
