Recapping Huge Weekend for USF

It was a huge and historic weekend for USF athletics.  For those who were sleeping or dodging rain drops during the past three days, here is what you missed.

The USF softball team hosted several opponents at the USF Invitational.  The ladies, entering the weekend at 3-1, were hoping to get a few wins during the tourny and were able to do just that.  USF got huge wins vs. Wisconsin and hung on for a win over Arkansas.  They beat Georgia Southern yesterday as they improved to 6-1 to start the season.  New comers like Kenshyra Jackson, Jessica Mouse, and Sam Greiner stepped up and made huge impacts for the team as Coach Eriksen and his ladies get off to a strong start this season.

Not to be out done by the softball team, the USF baseball team went 3-0 in the opening Big Ten/Big East Challenge.  Several players made their 2012 debuts after returning from surgery and injuries from last season.  Andrew Barbosa, Derrick Stultz, and Ray Delphey, among others, took the field and played key roles in the victories.  The Bulls will hope to carry the momentum when they play their first home game of the season on Wednesday night (7PM).

The WBB basketball team won a huge game over Pitt, improving to 15-13 (7-7) on the season.  Jasmine Wynne returned for the Bulls and sparked the offense late in the second half for the huge win.  The Bulls now have more wins and conference wins then last year and with a little luck and a push in the tournament, the ladies are still in the position to possibly get an NIT bid.

The biggest story that continues to be the buzz around the area is the success of the MBB team as they once again defied the odds, went on the road, and got a huge win.  The Bulls are 17-10 (10-5).  17 wins, 7 more than last year and the 10 conference wins, a program record, puts them in a tie for 4th place.  At the beginning of the year, very few saw this team reaching even half of these goals, but they continue to rise and shine and silence the critics.

USF track was also in action as Lindsey Lamar edged out Kayvon Webster for first place in the Big East indoor 60-meter.  It is the second straight year USF has won the event, showcasing the incredible speed on the team and on the football field as well.  The men currently sit in third place in the point standings while the ladies are in 8th place after 12 events.

It is not often that so many teams are in action at the same time and all of them winning in such fashion together for USF.  After a disappointing football season, fans have been looking for something to get excited about and with all of these great teams winning and starting their seasons, Spring is going to be a lot of fun to watch.
