The USF softball season got off to a great start today as the ladies swept both their games to begin the year with a 2-0 record.
The ladies won the first game in commanding fashion, rolling Maine 8 to 1. True freshman Sam Greiner got the start, going 6 innings, allowing just 3 hits, and struck out 8 batters, getting the win in her first start. The Bulls jumped out to a strong lead in the first inning, scoring 4 runs early. Gina Kafalas went 2 for 4 on the afternoon. Kourtney Salvarola went 1 for 1 with 3 walks and drove in an RBI. Kenshyra Jackson went 1 for 1 and brought home 2 runs. Jessica Mouse went 1 for 2, walking twice and drove in 3 runs in her debut for USF. Sara Nevins allowed the lone run after she was called for two illegal pitches, angering Eriksen which led him to getting tossed as he voiced his opinion to the refs.
The Bulls had more of a battle in the second game as they won 4 to 2 against FGCU. The ladies managed just 4 hits in the game, but solid starting pitching from Lindsey Richardson, who went 4.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and struck out 5 batters, held the Ospreys in check. Sara Nevins had a rough relief appearance going 2.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 runs, and struck out 4 as she got the win. Kafalas went 1 for 4 with an RBI, Stephanie Medina went 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Salvarola went 1 for 2 with another RBI as well.
The ladies are off to a great start to the season, but facing another tough double header tomorrow. They play Long Island at 1:45 to start and then face Illinois State at 4PM.
Woohoo!! Love watching this team... Could be something special in the making!!
