2012 Spring Preview: Defensive Line

Ryne Giddins returns as the top pass rusher for the defensive line (Picture: www.tbo.com)
The preview series rolls on as we continue to look at each unit as the team prepares for the 2012 season. We will look on the defensive side of the ball as we look to the front 4 on the defensive line.

Last year, the Bulls did a solid job against the run and ranked amongst the best in the nation in tackles for loss, showing their speed and ability to create trouble in the backfield.  USF has to find more consistency off the edge and will have a few new faces up the middle as well (sorry for the delay in the previews, there has been a few things happening with basketball recently).

At the defensive end position is Ryne Giddins (6-3 261-pounds) returns as one of the most explosive pass rushers in the Big East.  He had a quiet start to the 2011 season, but came on late and will be looked upon to anchor the edge.  At the other end position, Julis Forte (6-2 264-pounds) will look to lock up a starting position after playing as a key reserve last season.

Anthony Hill (6-4 282) returns as a key reserve to the end position as the Bulls have to remain healthy on the edge due to the lack of depth at the position.  JUCO Tevin Mims (6-4 250-pounds) has enrolled early and will get a chance to play early (USF has several freshmen coming in, but won't be available for the Spring).  The end position is a little thin this year, so the Bulls will need someone to step up and for everyone to stay healthy on the roster.

At the defensive tackle position, the Bulls return Elkino Watson (6-2 288-pounds) who made huge strides last season in his freshman year.  Cory Grissom (6-2 321-pounds) returns as a veteran starter to the line and  Luke Sager (6-3 277-pounds) also returns and will battle for playing time but there will be a lot of competition at this position.

The Bulls have some depth at the tackle position.  Freshman James Hamilton (6-4 335-pounds) could be a huge weapon inside after enrolling early in the Fall.  Former 4-star recruit Todd Chandler (6-0 297-pounds) appears to have his academics sorted out and could be a potential addition to the depth chart. Demi Thompson (6-1 276-pounds) returns after missing most of last year due to injuries.  Former defensive end Clavion Nelson (6-3 270-pounds) has added weight and will move over to the tackle position.  Cody Sanfratello (6-0 245-pounds) joins the mix as well.

The defensive tackle position will be a fun one to watch with big time talent in the middle (young as well).  The end position is something to be concerned about due to the lack of a deep roster at that position.  USF will need Giddins, Forte, and others to stay healthy and still be very productive to get the pass rush going this season.
