Victor Rudd had a strong game as the Bulls won their first NCAA tournament game in program history. |
History was made last night as the Bulls, in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, beat Cal 65 to 54, the first win in the tournament in program history. The Bulls jumped out to a huge lead, holding Cal to just 13 points in the first half, showcasing their aggressive defense. The Bulls led by as many as 30 points in the game as they were able to rest several of the starters and get the big win as the clock went to zero (team is now 21-13).
Victor Rudd had a huge game. He scored 15 points and had 6 rebounds as 4 USF players scored in double digits. Augustus Gilchrist had 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks in an all around solid game for him. Anthony Collins had 12 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal as he continues his impressive play at the point. Ron Anderson Jr. had 4 points and 4 rebounds and Hugh Robertson had 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists on the night as well. The bench got plenty of minutes in this one. Toarlyn Fitzpatrick had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Jawanza Poland had 10 points and 2 rebounds. Shaun Noriega hit a 3 and Blake Nash had 5 assists as well.
This was a huge game for the team. They came out and played their aggressive defense, shutting down Cal and the offense came out early and put the Bulls ahead for good. This is the first win in program history for the Bulls and it was a beauty. The Bulls will now travel to Nashville to take on Temple in the first round on Friday (game starts at 9:50PM). USF is the 12 seed while Temple is the 5 seed in that bracket. If the Bulls can come out like they did in this game, they have a chance.
